Something somewhat positive that came out of this whole thing is I’ve realised I really am a textbook workaholic.

All I ever do is think about work and now that I’m apathetic towards the current job, my mind is unoccupied.

It feels uncomfortable right now. Having to accept certain realities about isolation and loneliness.

But at least now I know.

    It’s a start.

Have you ever tried volunteering? If you find the right gig you can channel all of that work energy into it, and the community benefits. And you make like-minded friends.

Yes. A start. As you get more confident, you can branch out a bit more and make more connections. It’s tough but it can be done. And you have your music (and Gibson).

Got the offer from Toshiba but there will be a background check. So let’s see what happens. Another place did the reference check so that’s good.

Place number 3 is still interviewing.

    I have a question:

From what you’ve heard about my workplave, would you take slightly less money to leave, or stick it out for a better deal?

Edit: Thank you everyone for your opinions and insights. I’ll probably take a lesser contract if it gets me out of here. Admittedly, since I stopped caring whatsoever about my work (still up to standard though), I’ve felt a shit tonne better. I no longer have any personal stake in it.

You spend a third of your life at work, so you need to be happy and safe there. Your better deal is going to come with strings, so it’s not really better. Take less dollars for peace and support because it will cost you less in the long run.

I’d take a pay cut for peace of mind, particularly after hearing about all the crap you’ve been through there. Working for a (hopefully) more professional and reputable org will likely mean better job security and advancement opportunities in future, too. Whatever you decide, good luck!

I would take less money to leave, provided it’s not a huge drop for a like-to-like role (like up to $10k or so). I was in a similar situation to you once, never regretted leaving and then working on increasing my salary at the new job once I was in the door.

      Take less.

If my brain is functioning, apparently 80k is the happiness mark, beyond that it pretty much remains the same. There are also endless stories of people who had immensely well paying jobs who have taken drastic pay cuts and blue collar jobs and are exponentially happier.

While I’m in an odd sort of position, dropping a day when I was permanent to converting to casual and finally going elsewhere… So much happier. So much. (There were a couple extra things going on, but still. That feeling that you have to be there, when you don’t want to… Ugh.)

You current place sounds like a cross between thunderdome and a sinking ship. I’d try to leverage you current salary against the new offers, but, assuming they’re all over $75k, I’d accept a 10% hit for a job at a better place. At the first performance review I’d be pressing for them to at least match the old salary.

Hm, I’d leave, even if the pay is slightly less at the new place. One of the most important aspects of society today is mental health, and no matter how much money you make, if a workplace is contributing to a severe decline in your mental health it is always best to move on!

I place a lot of value on mental health - because treating it is fucking costly as well not just in terms of treatments/support/comfort, but also lost opportunities and time - so the gap in pay would have to be quite significant for me to stay on at a rapidly deteriorating workplace.

I initially took a fair bit of a pay cut (>10k/yr if you include allowances) from my old job to each of my two roles last year, but it was infinitely worth it for how much less stress was involved at work. And it’s paid off; the job I stayed on at increased my wage so much that the FTE is now equivalent to what I last earned (including allowances) but for FAR less stress and responsibilities in terms of colleagues as well as the workload itself.

Cannot recommend it more highly. Work often feels like such a bloody waste of time anyway, I don’t want it to eat up so much of my mental energy as well if my main financial needs are met

      Hard one to be honest.

You’re probably being overworked and not being paid enough though I don’t know what that figure is.

Also they’ve made you a scapegoat with some of the stuff that’s happened and also I’m not sure what the future of the company is considering what’s happened so far but you do have a job.

I would take slightly less money to be a lot happier and have less of a workload if that makes you happy but also it’s often said the grass is greener on the other side.

Job application for animal tech role completed! Fuck I hope I get an interview at least, so I can see what those types of roles are looking for specifically.

I still don’t know if I want to go vet nurse or animal tech though. I can do the Cert IV Vet Nurse at my current TAFE, or go to Box Hill for the Diploma in Animal Tech. Vet Nurses are needed quite desperately, but so are Animal Techs, and Animal Tech is very lab-based research - which is extremely up my alley haha.

I’d love to be an advocate for animal welfare in animal tech spaces, and I’m not sure I could handle vet nursing due to the clients (many unknowingly mistreat their pets), but either way I just want to help animals. Vet nursing means I can help owners understand their pets needs, and animal tech means I could contribute to life saving medicine and research.

I was also considering animal agriculture as well, but I’ll 100% need my driver’s license for that!

I love all the animals! Choices choices!!!

I don’t know much about careers and stuff but if they’re equally appealing you could go for whichever has the higher salary, so you have a bit more financial stability if you want to change to the other one in future?

Or whichever offers experience to help you get into the other (if it works like that)

If I was being selfish I’d say vet nutrition so you could invent poultry free prescription food.

True true! I think I’d just happy working with animals at this point, regardless of the actual job! And I have about six months before I get my cert III so plenty of time to think and research and apply :D

True about the poultry free!! So hard because I think a lot of it is chickens are pretty cheap to process, and taurine is a requirement for cats specifically, so it’s an easy way to get that amino acid. I think there is taurine powder available, that can be added to their diet, but I don’t know much about that or what else is in it! But thank you! Another career option to consider!!!

I had an interest in a certain line of work around 10 years ago. I literally drove to those companies unannounced and asked the the owners if I could chat about the career for a bit. To my surprise they were very accommodating and answered all my questions. It helped immensely.

      Maybe try that?

They’ll probably start you in the laundry room for three months. It’s a pretty easy four hour shift doing industrial laundry and delivering clean towels to the areas. I later moved to kennels. The laundry shift is great in winter, it’s really warm with the big dryers. I left because a kennel tech cracked the shits at me for playing with a ‘red’ coded dog that I’d asked the lead tech about. The dog wasn’t aggressive but it was strong and would jump at people with an open mouth creating a bite risk. I’m also a big strong dude so I was trying to help socialise the dog in a calm manner and the mid range tech came in an yelled at me without knowing the full story so I quit.

Wow. My cousin is engaged, and he’s dated the girl for a year. He broke up with his last girlfriend at the middle of 2023, and got with his current one at the start of 2024. They’ve been living together for a few months. She is from overseas and is not a citizen, so half the family is questioning if she wants to marry him for citizenship. I guess sometimes, when you know, you know, and I hope it works out for him.

Yes it might be depending on context. But. I literally know of at least 2 marriages in the ethnic community I’m from that are like this. Person marries a citizen to stay. It not an easy process though, but for some couples they may find the arrangement mutually beneficial so it happens. Of course this does not mean this is the case for LowExperience relative. Success!!! After weeks of procrastination and increasingly yucky feelings, I’ve finally used some super janky half-manual method to randomly sample my fucking points and loaded them onto my field app SO NOW I HAVE ABSOLUTELY ZERO EXCUSE TO START ON MY FIELDWORK TOMORROW. FINALLY.

Just need to wait for the message advising me what time my dishwasher will arrive, hopefully it’s in the afternoon so I can get a few hours done in the morning without having to drive all the way out west then back.

While I’m at it, maybe I’ll finally do this dumbshit fb marketplace listing I’ve been procrastinating on, and brave the horrors of my fridge crisper to see which vegetables I can salvage.

But I managed to finally use that ancient beetroot (V slicer to the rescue), made a pot of dal and fried up a slab of tempeh. Tomorrow, I freeze some of the beetroot curry, and make a cabbage stir fry. And put my new dishwasher to use, with today’s mountain of dishes generated, hopefully…

Off work today and tomorrow to try and beat myself into getting this uni fieldwork started - adhd tendencies in hyperdrive… just unable to focus on the random sampling bit so that I can get out there already while the weather’s good. I’ll get there, beating myself up is not helpful…

…but the good news is, today’s been a day for procrastiductivity: I FINALLY PULLED THE TRIGGER and bought an 8-place benchtop dishwasher after some research. As it always goes: it really wasn’t that difficult after all!

It’s arriving tomorrow; hopefully Appliances Online will bring it up the stairs for me. Installation should be super easy, just attach it directly to the spare washing machine tap I mysteriously have, and drain out to the laundry sink immediately adjacent.

I only have 3 months left on my lease (hopefully can extend to 4-5 to see me through the end of uni), but dishes are an obvious pain point for me that drags down my mood and momentum, so $315 is worth it - it’s about an extra day of work after tax, I can make up for it easily. And it should be easy to sell on afterwards if I don’t need it later

I almost have no choice but to put it in the “laundry” as I can’t sacrifice any more benchtop space in the kitchen; as it is I have to keep putting away my air fryer and rice cooker after use and haven’t even taken my toaster out, all of which shits me. But the “laundry” works a lot better because it’s basically a cupboard right next to the kitchen anyway - so minimal steps to transfer items, and makes use of empty space on top of the washing machine.
