Happy Friday motherfondlers! Guess who got the job 😎😎😎😎

Well, pending standard preemployment checks, the links for which if they don’t come through today should arrive on Tuesday. Fingers crossed I can get it all sorted by the end of next week :D

I really need to stop procrastinating on getting a car though because even though this job won’t exactly pay enough for all running costs after rent and bills (being two days a week), I’ve been meaning to get one anyway and have savings kept aside for that. Plus I’m slowly feeling more positive and motivated about getting my arse off crosswords and cooking up side gigs to supplement this as I want

e: didn’t want to clog up dt with replies to everyone but thank you all for the congratulatory messages :D

They’re doing reference checks and then I have a coffee catchup with the person who would be my direct report. Fingers crossed!

Thank you!! I’m lucky this came up too, not many PT roles around in my field atm. And I really liked the vibe of the team - even admin wise they are much more coordinated than the previous place I interviewed at.

Always a good sign when the admin side is up to scratch. The support team is usually very undervalued (and female) and utterly essential to getting the work done on time and within budget. Been there, done that. Looks like it’s coming up Milhouse for you.

Proof of the pudding is in the first few weeks of eating - but so far so good. I’ve only ever been to one other interview (the recent one) in 7 years so not much to compare, but from everything I’ve gathered so far it feels like there’s a good culture around women, especially important considering I work in a very male-dominated industry (bodes well that my predecessor, now supervisor, is a woman herself!)

Heck, there’s even a clause in the EBA for Extreme Menstrual Pain Leave! I would’ve loved that all those years before getting an IUD.

Depends on the employment checks really, I think most of it is just uploading documents so should be all clear by end of next week - however if there is a medical check then that can be a bit delayed depending on the medical provider. I think it won’t take more than 2 weeks all up, so best case week after next, worst case Easter.

The job won’t bring in mega bux, just cover my rent and essential bills, so I’m still cautious of living it up (I also still have a compromised appetite due to meds). I’ll still be eating into my savings for some things esp as I already have an upcoming splurge on a now-or-never OS holiday with good friends in late May/early Jun… But it’s still an excellent base income to stress ratio and I’m allowing myself to use a chunk of my savings as recovery from massive burnout over the last 3 years.

I did treat myself to buying some fresh Australian barramundi from the fancy butcher though. Maybe I’ll get some NZ king ora salmon after my first pay 😋

Just a once off I think it’s ok and the fish certainly counts. Do tell how will you cook the barramundi?

Hopefully it won’t take as long as 2 weeks for all the checks to be done so you can start sooner and at least stabilise your income a little sooner rather than later.

It’s a carribean spice blend, you can buy it pre made but I made a rough and dirty approximation of it with the spices I have. It’s spicy but also smoky with a sweet undertone and I added lemon juice for more of a kick. Has a diverse range of flavours - thyme, chili pepper, allspice, cinnamon, garlic and onion powder - lots going on.

Yeah I’m hoping there isn’t a medical (HR said there was at the interview but when I got the call from the hiring manager there wasn’t anything). That will be the slow part.

Unlikely I’ll get to start next week with Mon being a PH. I was hoping to set my work days as Mon and Tues anyway. Good news is some of the pre employment check links just came through so I can get those sorted out right away.

E: also re fish I’m thinking I’ll try a Jamaican jerk rub, and a side of tomato rice. Either that or steamed with hunan chillies, and a side of shiitake rice

The ABC correspondent I’ve been speaking to has suggested that if I show my face, be it in a photo or video interview, the story will have a higher chance of being picked up.

I would lose so much in my professional and personal life it’s not funny.

I don’t want to appear in Google searches. I don’t want to be the “face” of addiction recovery.

Am I being selfish? Or are they being blind even asking for photos or video?

I want to help, I want people that are stigmatized to be seen in a different light.

I just don’t know if I can sacrifice so much for it.

    Fuck.

I wouldn’t do it. Why blow up your own life when you’ve just gotten back on your feet?

Let them blur your face and distort your voice.

As for the journalist, they just want views and couldn’t give a fuck about your welfare.

Don’t do it if you’re not comfortable - even if it means they might not proceed with the rest of the article, doesn’t mean you’re shutting the door on helping stigmatised people forever. It’s just not the right time yet for you, and that’s okay! Who knows, in 5 years time you might have such a secure position in life that you will be ready to go public. Or maybe you might never, and only be able to go with a blurred face and pen name. Hell, I would say most people wouldn’t want to appear with face and name in a news article in the first place - let alone people in your position. It’s a scary world out there in terms of data collection.

Oh yeah, and be warned. You don’t know what kind of spin the journalist might put on it. Or if they’re going to even stick to the consented to subject. It’s in their interest to get your trust so you open up.

Someone I know was going to go to the media about a longstanding issue they weren’t getting redress for. The journo ended up interviewing a family member of the original person, taking pictures and asking about things that were none of their business, and spinning up a shamey narrative ‘exposing’ and demonising the relatives in something that was basically a puff piece playing into divisive public sentiment. Basically they saw a random opportunity for rage bait and went for it. This person got their reputation publicly destroyed.

Nothing happened with the original issue that help was needed for. That was left ignored.

It’s YOUR choice. You do not have a duty to show your face, to rescue other people at the expense of your life.

The show will be forgotten in a year or two, it’s effect will be minimal ( tho it will be real and positive)

but the negative effect on you will be forever

Leave the public faces to those who do it for a living and who can have a big effect. Like politicians and famous health care policy makers and workers.

I say. Don’t show your face. Your privacy , your name, is one of those most valuable assets you have. Don’t have it destroyed.

I didn’t tell you all my embarrassing story from Wednesday night but now I’m gonna.

The short version: I fully stacked a rental scooter and it was not elegant.

So I was riding home from dinner Wednesday night when I got to Harbour Esplanade. There was a large group of people blocking the entire path obliviously just messing around so I attempted to go around them on the left. This was at the pedestrian crossing which goes across the road/tram lines and is the entrance to a tram stop.

It turned out that between the tram lines wasn’t concrete like on the pedestrian crossing but a drop off and rocks, which I hit hard and went over the handlebars and landed on my right side. I landed on the helmet which was hanging from the scooter (I don’t wear them…) and completely destroyed it. A few people asked if I was alright. I was in pain but more embarrassed so I just said I was fine and got myself up and dusted myself off. Managed to not break my phone (left pocket) or my sunglasses (hanging from the neck of my tshirt) which was a plus but I got a decent boo-boo on my elbow, which later also developed an egg-sized egg that evening. Also got a nice bruise on my right knee, a couple of bruises on my back and somehow one on my left inner thigh (maybe landing on the helmet). The worst of it though was that I stupidly braced my fall with my right hand out, which really hurt my thumb where it meets my palm. I wasn’t sure if I’d broken anything in it or my wrist but it was agony to touch. Moving it hurt but I had full range of movement and no crunchy sounds so I figure it’s just bruised and I’ve been resting it since and it does seem to slowly be getting less painful.

Today the pain in my back is the worst it has been though. I’m ok getting around but twisting and bending is no bueno.

Anywho… that’s what happened. It has been quite some time since I’ve fallen over. It’s definitely not as fun as I remember it being.

Urgh…the nationwide shortage of ADHD meds, specifically in my case Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine), is a real worry. I was first prescribed 40mg then I was given an additional script for 20mg, so 60mg a day all up. But for the second time this year there are no 40s, so I’ve blasted through my scripts for 20s by having to take 3 a day. My GP clinic can’t/won’t take on the management of my meds, so I have to get scripts from my psych…and he’s on leave and cannot be contacted.

The system is so rigid. Local pharmacies have heaps of 20s which I don’t have a script for, but they can’t substitute those for the 40s which I do have a script for. It’s infuriating.

I’m on Concerta(though, I was thinking about asking about Vyvanse… But maybe not), so haven’t had any shortage issues, but the authorization for my GP to manage my meds expired and I have to find and pay for a new psych. It’s such bullshit that I need to pay so much to get meds for a condition I was diagnosed with at the age of 8.

I feel you (and owl). I don’t have ADHD or take related medication, but I do have a lot of trouble sleeping so used to take a small dose of melatonin to help. Unfortunately my script lapsed just after I moved back in July, but because I’m under 18 the GP can’t prescribe sleeping medication without authority from a paediatrician. I still haven’t managed to get that sorted out yet. The whole medication system seems pretty messed up

Get thee to iHerb and don’t look back. You can order it in without a prescription no problems. And much cheaper too (while you’re on that website might as well get some bulk vitamins or supplements to make the shipping worthwhile, still a lot cheaper than the chemists).

My only advice is, more is not better in terms of melatonin dosage; avoid being tempted by those 10mg tablets (even 3mg is too much in my experience. I believe 0.1-0.5mg per night is meant to be ideal)

Wow I’ve never heard of this. I thought that melatonin was a prescription only thing when under 55. I was on a 2mg dose, so I might try a 1mg and see if that works, otherwise just continue on with 2mg.

I used to be a fussy child and found it really hard to swallow medication (not the case anymore) so my carers used to go to a compounding pharmacy and get little capsules made up for me, so they were even more expensive than regular melatonin (and since they were custom compounded, there weren’t any rebates or concessions available either). I believe my paediatrician did actually recommend this site or one similar back in 2019 too. I distinctly remember her bringing up a website that sold melatonin gummy bears she could recommend, that looked somewhat similar to this iherb one. But child protection wouldn’t allow it because of concerns over imported medication or something. It was kinda odd, and I think that’s why I ended up with a prescription in the first place. They’re not allowed to go against the formal recommendation of a medical practitioner though, so they just dealt with the more expensive capsule things.

Edit: I think calling it a “supplement” rather than being prescription medication also means I wouldn’t have to go through the VicRoads medication review tribunal thing, right?

It is technically prescription-only for under 55s but because of whatever schedule it is under somehow you could still get it imported without a problem. Maybe because it’s instant release, not modified release - It’s totally bs how there’s a whole bunch of different rules around it.

Looking it up now, I see in 2021 modified-release melatonin was downscheduled to Schedule 3 (Pharmacist Only) - meaning its behind the pharmacy counter but no presceiption needed - but only for over-55s again 🙄 if you can’t use iherb… Know any old people? Lol

It also won’t come under any vicroads scrutiny I believe, because it’s not even a supplement, it’s a naturally occurring hormone (which is part of the reasoning for ot being fully OTC in many other parts of the world. Hell, even in highly strict Singapore you can buy it at the chemists at any shopping centre, even the airport before your flight!)

I definitely have trouble with handling the dose/timing of normal dexamphetamine - outside a narrow window it fucks up my sleep or I feel like a zombie - so I’m keen to try lisdexamphetamine but the shortages have made it not an option for a while :/

I was going to post a picture of my sunset kransky in bread on the beach to show off but…

Then this happened on the way back:

I was riding back from the dog beach on a very loud trike… this little one just walked in front and headed to the dog drinking bowl. It did not care about me at all.

Took this from about 50cm away. Guessing it is an orphaned juvenile. It did not give a single fuck. I’ve never seen that. huh.

Hopefully it’s just somewhat used to humans and was just very thirsty. The ones in my front yard are happy to sit on the nbn cable and watch me water the garden from only a couple of metres distance

It would be nice to live in a time and place where villages were the norm, where people could go out to the street for company, have a chat about anything, with people that are lifelong friends about whatever is on your mind. In today’s time and place, having friend contact needs special planning and arrangements and it’s rare to have them all in one place and know each other. I wonder if this modern life with lack of social contact is contributing to mental health epidemic.

Which is kinda romantic to think about. I expect the reality was quite a mixed bag. EVERYONE knew exactly what all your problems were, what your kids were getting up to that they shouldn’t have, and everything that you SHOULD have been doing and weren’t. Both your friends AND your enemies. And there’s a much higher level of social control and huge consequences for stepping outside the agreed upon social norms. Reading the Miss Marple stories - you realise just how much filthbaggery went on in a village. And Jane Austen and Mrs Gaskell’s works are full of the consequences of living in a very small social circle that you couldn’t escape from.

before television people used to go out and visit friends, family and neighbours after work. To chat, play cards, have a cup of te

now everyone sits at home watching tv

but we are such a social animal that the first chance we had of connecting again we grabbed it, we went on the net

but net is being abused by some people, it’s too private, and defending yourself from manipulative words is hard , even adults have trouble with mean people

      a balance would be good

Yeah. People working all the time, being forced to move wherever they can afford (and move frequently), opposing shifts, car dependence, the norm being nuclear families with little support meaning people pair off and disappear into their immediate family. Every outside space except libraries being monetised. In some places anti-homeless architecture means a place isn’t inviting or there’s nowhere comfortable to sit…

It’s the loss of community and third places.

Also it’s self reinforcing. My neighbourhood is quite rough (frequent issues with mental health and resulting violence/antisocial behaviour) so I don’t feel comfortable going out. Other places might not have anywhere for local people to go, period.

So then you get everybody having heavy reliance on the increasingly corporatised social media hellscape, creating new issues.

When people in the street ask you how you’re doing and they name your parents and ask how they’re doing and you have no clue who the fuck they are so you run back home to tell mum and dad and they ask “well who was it?” and you reply with “I don’t know” and they spend the rest of the night trying to work out who I spoke to.

I’ve lived that “village” life. I wouldn’t say it contributes to better mental health but it doesn’t hurt to know your neighbours a bit more.

I’m back in Melbourne and can confirm the Hume heading north looked like a nightmare.

Miss Meow coped better with the trauma of a pet sitter visiting this time - the sitter never saw her, but she was waiting at the front door when I came inside instead of hiding so I take that as a positive move. Mr Woof was apparently very happy with the visit once he realised food was involved, even though this was a stranger he had never met (this was a fill in as the original sitter that came last time injured herself and could not come).

Just read that Samantha Murphy accused killer was at a property with his girlfriend when police stormed in to get him. Did she know? Imagine what she must of thought if she didn’t. Must have had her blood turn cold.

Coles selling Dove Body Wash for half price…that’s still 50 cents more than the Aldi regular price.

      They can go jump.

With how much I’m paying just on essentials, the little money I have left over isn’t going on whatever they feel like charging. I buy multipacks of gentle ‘bar soap’ and often wash my hair with it too.

I never go to Coles, and haven’t been to woolies for groceries in a long time (the cat will only eat Dine brand, and Aldi doesn’t stock it. He’s a fickle pickle cat-pitalist).

Too expensive, all of it. The specials aren’t special anymore. Aldi has been amazing, half the cost of woolies for my usual shop.

We are continuing the celebration of women by playing female singers. The man was busy at work today…making a Spotify list. He told me “it’s not International women’s day without Samantha Fox. Every boy his age had a poster of her on their wall”.

We’ve moved on now. J5 and DMB Work It Out just played.

How it works is this: man makes list. I suggest songs. He queues them. I’m forbidden from touching list because I can destroy. I have literally made lists disappear too many times.
