It’s nice seeing people’s Christmas trees. I myself don’t decorate because no kids and can’t be bothered. There are a couple of houses nearby that do lots of lights and I look forward to them putting their decorations up. So to all the decorators out there, thankyou for the Christmas spirit, sincerely from the non-decorators. We appreciate it.

Back from shopping. Soooooo humid. Preston market is crazed, they had the misting spray on to cool people down - in close to 100% humidity. Not terribly effective.

Side note : found a lonely block of frozen tofu at the bottom of the freezer. I’m bored with my usual marinades so any suggestions? I usually do either a curry paste based one or a standard soy/mirin/chilli one.

      I ❤️my Teriyaki Sauce:

1/2 cup low sodium Tamari (or soy sauce)

      3/4 cup pineapple juice

      1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar

      5 tablespoons brown sugar

      1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger

      2 teaspoons grated garlic

      1 teaspoon sesame oil.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the Tamari, pineapple juice, vinegar, brown sugar, ginger, garlic and sesame oil. Whisk to combine well.

Bring to a boil then reduce the heat to medium low. Continue to cook for 10 minutes stirring occasionally. Remove from heat to cool and set aside.

Man, I really have to go out more. I’m the awkward person in the group tonight.

Admittedly I’m the outsider in a somewhat close knit group, but still.

can I just add , this weather is really shitty for humans

but it’s good for bread making so today I will be making a dozen olive bread dinner rolls and I’ll add a cup of warm milk to the mix to make it extra soft, tender and milky white.

The amount of sales-related emails and texts I’ve been getting is staggering. More than any previous year I feel. These businesses ask for a mobile for an online order and then it gets used to spam promotions. Mass unsubscribing is in order.

Only slightly related, but my monthly average for spam emails on my main Gmail account is 100. Early last year, I got 22,000 in a single month. And they auto delete after 28 days…

Then, 2 months later, they all vanished and it’s been back down to about 100 ever since

We ended up playing No Mercy Uno, an epic battle which required the entire (massive) deck of cards to be shuffled 3 times. Elder threw in the towel, and eventually Miniest did too. So I won but it was a hollow victory born from endurance rather than skill!

Edit: I love Wall-E though, very underrated film in my book.

Now starts the Xmas parties. Had a stupid headache before so I’m hoping I’ll feel better to go to a night I’ve yet again already bought a ticket for.

Beverages may or may not be enjoyed.

Am also in an Uber right now who may be taking the crap route. 😑

Place is looking a bit more habitable, wfh desk setup, still very cluttered and need to get rid of the poang footstool (chair in bedroom piled with crap) which will open up more space.

Let’s hope my plants will look this lush over the next 6 months! These are the survivors after many deaths (and much neglect in a sunnier place).

Thanks! It is nice looking at the plants from the couch (where I took the photo). Starting to feel cozy. It’ll definitely look nicer once I get rid of the footstool and unpack some of the books.

I reckon you’ll find it easier once you’re closer to the city and feel more connected to where you live - and a smaller space forces you to get creative too as I mentioned to Spud.

Those are some nice-looking floorboards though, dang! Haven’t lived in a house with real floorboards in forever…

No xmas tree but bI’ve assembled the bookcase after much effort…

    rant at self

…and stupidly not trying to look up what it was beforehand (it’s an old mid-2000s model of IKEA Bestå shelf, the label was barely legible).

In doing so, tried doing it the wrong way around entirely and irreversibly snapped the tip of 6 cam lock screw/dowels that are discontinued (114928), on one entire side. The sides and centre part of the shelf no longer lock onto that side.

I’ve put the working ones facing the bottom so it still stands, thankfully, but it means this shelf isn’t even worth giving away for free when I move out, it’ll have to go to the tip.

Even though there’s a replacement part on thingiverse, I don’t have access to a 3d printer and it’d take a lot of effort to dislodge the old snapped ones, plus I’ve badly scuffed the edges of the bookshelf after all this wrangling.

Really annoyed with myself because i hate sending shit to landfill out of my own carelessness, but I’m going to have to just move on (and remind myself at least my consumption and waste ends with me).

At least the bookshelf is still usable for now and I can start moving shit onto it so I can finish unpacking. And it’s probably had a good run. Still, feeling low… need a win… that doesn’t involve spending money…

it ain't much, but it's honest work

If it helps you can sometimes borrow access to 3D printers at makerspaces. They would absolutely let you print out a replacement especially if it’s small

Actually if there’s one thing I really need 3D printed it’s a replacement for my fridge shelf. Fucking thing just cracked on me and broke 2 nights ago (with hardly anything on it - had to clean a smashed bottle of lime pickle to boot). Can’t seem to find a replacement, someone has a 3d printer design for something that looks similar though…

I’m a bit hesitant to drill anything into the wall given I’ll be out of here in 6 months and don’t want to go through the whole spakfilla nonsense especially with a carpeted floor. I’ve got a friend who has a narrow lightweight shelving unit that she doesn’t need any more, that’ll probably fill the gap in terms of additional storage once I’ve cleared everything up. I’ll have to store some kitchen items in the living room as there’s simply no space

You could probably cover the scuffs with some permanent marker or paint (even nail polish, if they make it in that colour)

Yeah I’ll probably cover the scuffs for now with permanent marker. Not sure if I will bother storing this/taking it with me when I leave this joint. Maybe my mood will be different then and I’ll make more of an effort to try and keep it…
