This reminds me a bit of my grandfather’s 80th birthday cake. Well you just try putting 80 candles on a cake, any cake. So Mum put a 75w light bulb in the middle and 5 candles around the edge. Grandpa didn’t know whether to be amused or offended. And he was easily offended.

That’s genius. I feel like after 21 it doesn’t really matter.

The kid got a candle stuck in a macaron and a speedy happy birthday song in the middle of Brunetti’s. Her friends loved it.

it has been a rough few weeks, team. I kinda wish I weren’t off the booze, which means it’s probably a good thing I am.

edit: before anyone’s concerned, I’ve been off the booze all year, I’m just saying

As an occasional drinker, I can vouch it make a bad time way worse to deal with. It’s a momentary relief, a way to check-out of our brains, but doesn’t solve anything. Not really.

You have made the correct choice and continue to do so! Despite it all, you are strong and awesome. A kind and beautiful person! (Just wanted to pass on some love 💜😁)

oh, I’m so pleased I gave up. for me it was a sleep issue, but it has helped in so many other ways. I still drunk occasionally, but I absolutely notice it when I do

yup - giving up has been a great choice! mostly I don’t miss it, but an extremely hard few weeks makes a glass of red in the bath sound very tempting. Here’s a herbal tea cheers to you (or whatever your muddle aged person drunk of choice is!)

edit: drunk of choice was a totally appropriate typo so I’m leaving it

edit edit: props to you for giving up, for whatever your reasons were

Thanks! My drunk of choice is herbal or matcha tea actually. I gave up for a few different reasons, basically the kids, the money and the health. I’d been using it as a coping mechanism for too long when it wasn’t working, the kids deserve to see better role modelling and every other adult person in their lives drinks so somebody has to not. I don’t begrudge others a bevy though.

Good on you for not drinking when things are tough… it’s an easy way to end up with hard problems sometimes.

My girlfriend has finished her first day of her final placement. It would be great if she got a job out of this. It’s a more chill childcare centre because it gets direct government funding and it’s a 5 minute walk from our place.

She could be out the door at 8 and home at 4. Unbelievable living for an outer suburb like this

4 days later and my toe is basically better. Still can’t fully move it, but it’s definitely muscular rather than bone-ular… Also massively overstretched my calf and shin muscles in the incident, which is the main source of discomfort now. Always tuck your backpack straps away people.

My new drivers licence arrived! Relief. I’ve been waiting for that to submit my stuff to my new job’s third party ID/police check company which I just did. Also pretty nice to have unexpired photo ID for the first time in three years.

Now I just need to hope they don’t have an issue with the murders I’ve committed.

Had a radox salt bath last night (would’ve bought it 15 yrs ago). Haven’t had an actual bath in donkeys ears. Trying to undo some back niggles from the weirdo twisting weight / angle stuff with this fukn retaining wall.

In my raver days used to come home at an ungodly hour, after the all night boogie, jump in the bath with that green stuff then really struggle to crawl out.

They were good times. These days not so much. No rave, only pain.

Each time I get my tax info from the ATO, there’s a breakdown of where the money is going.

About 30% of my paid taxes goes to aged care. I’m not saying we shouldn’t take care of the elderly and we have an aging population, but imagine if we actually invested a chunk of that into our future and education.

I know that aged care employs a lot of people and provides good services, but the proportion just seems massive.

Honestly, I think I vent about this every year.

About 30% of my paid taxes goes to aged care.

My concern is more if THAT much is going into it why are some of them living in such squalor? I’ve 0 issue looking after the aged care, they should live like kings after paying taxes all their lives. But I have a massive issue with paying that much for what were getting. Imagine you spend 100k on a new BMW and the dealer delivers a MG and pockets the rest.

That would have to include pensions and other welfare instead, I think actual aged care is about 8% of govt. expenditure.

A lot of the problem is that aged care is just really expensive, especially as we are able to keep people alive for longer with higher needs. We also have a system which sucks a lot of money out into the hands of private providers, which is not something I can see changing as long as the dominant cultural opinion is that Govt. services = expensive bureaucracy, and that private providers = efficient, competitive services. The reality is generally the opposite, especially when services are being provided to vulnerable people who are not able to advocate for themselves. A system where elderly people who are struggling to manage on their own are expected to compare providers and shop around for the best deal is ridiculous, but that is what we have. And instead of the scams and rorting by providers who overcharge and mismanage the care packages being addressed, they are adding in more restrictions on what elderly people can actually receive. A top level home care package can provide $60k a year in funding - about $21k of that goes directly in management fees to the package management company, then more gets sucked out through fees with the agencies that actually provide the staff, high profit margins on supplies and equipment etc.

Housesitting this week which means I have a backyard momentarily. Am making to most of it and working outside in the sun. Need to find myself a good spot near home in the sun/nature that I can go to work sometimes because this is nice.
