Why am I up >:( Oh well, better make the most of the morning before it gets spicy.
What’s everyone’s plans for this afternoon and tomoz?
I’m still debating whether to go into the office tomorrow if I’m going to have the ac running at home at 25C overnight/all day anyway, to stop the place from being a total furnace
Necessary chores this morning - early as possible. Then some long overdue dressmaking. This actually works well in hot weather - the cloth sits better imo. Have to work tomorrow but there’s good aircon there so no drama. And we have the cool change late tomorrow to look forward to.
Just getting through the necessary chores myself - including cooking up another big batch of hoppin’ John to use up sad fridge veg and pantry items. About to take laundry to the laundromat to dry.
May we see snippets of your gorgeous dresses when you’re done? I have so much respect and awe for people who can make their own clothes (once a common thing in my mum’s and your generation…)
I’m so grateful for those quick cool changes. Having lived through a couple of relentless Perth heatwaves, it’s so much easier here (that said, both cities are experiencing a bit more humidity over summer which is making things worse - especially for the poor Perth sods with evaporative AC).
The stuff I make is mostly comfort clothing to very basic patterns (mostly drafted by me as I’m not a standard size) and not very fitted. I’m not yet willing to wear homemade out to work. I did get some gorgeous cotton print a few weeks ago for this summer’s tees and shorts - if they come out alright I’ll post pix. I do like having clothes that sit well and wash well. Oddly, the price differential is not great. Fabric in this country is expensive, even if you go to the discount outlets, and the labour cost - well that has to come under the ‘cost of fun’ heading.
Oh yes please it’d be lovely to see how the tees come out. I have a cousin who is the only one of our generation who’s chosen to keep up sewing but she never made tees due to the stretchy fabric being difficult to work with.
Nobody I know who still makes their own clothes does it to save any $ - it’s for fun and comfort. I do wish I had the skill/gumption to learn as I have a bit of an odd body shape that makes it hard to buy pants and skirts, specifically. If it goes over the bum it’s too large for my waist and vice-versa. At least I ought to learn how to replace the elastic waistband on one of my beloved op shop finds (that I’m sure was homemade too, judging by the rickrack).
Re: bum/waist differential - you are singing my song! I am a classic hourglass, and NOTHING in the shops fits without some adjustment which is a total pain, cos re-working a purchased garment is sheer hell. I wish I was back in 1890 when my figure was the ideal. But the sixties happened and Twiggy & Kate Moss (later) just ruined the fit of any purchasable garments. And my top half is 2 sizes smaller than my bottom half, and I have plump arms to boot, so even shirts etc. IN MY SIZE don’t fit either, especially around the armholes and upper arm. Waaaaaahh! Learning to sew started as sheer self-defence.
Maybe next year when you’re a bit more settled, you can bring over the elastic waistband (op.cit.) and I can put a new one in for you if you like. Good garments need to be preserved and used.
Ahhhh! Someone who understands the pain of an hourglass shape - might look sexy but no benefits whatsoever with buying clothes (especially if you don’t want to look sexy, just normal and comfortable). I’m lucky my arms are normal sized (though my wrists are tiny so I often look out of proportion).
Australia is still a heck of a lot easier to buy clothes in than Singapore, where everything is designed for sticks; I wore t shirts and jeans my entire teenage years and only developed a bit of a fashion sense after coming here. It was a revelation finding a dress that actually fit, and pants that covered my bum without leaving a gaping hole behind my back. As a result if anything fits I keep it for ages, even when I haven’t worn it in years.
Thank you so, so much for the offer re: waistband btw, that is incredibly kind. I’m planning to take it to my aunty’s in January and get it fixed there (she did the last replacement) but I’ll let you know if that fails.
Deal.
I was gonna see the grandparents today, but I might bail on that considering lol
Tonight I’ll close all the blinds, put the aircon on overnight, and try to keep the cat cool on Monday lol he’s my priority, Idc if I’m a sweaty mess, but lil puss can’t sweat
Try and get more sleep after the work Xmas party, got home late (for me anyway). I unfortunately was seated right across from the split system and now I feel all blocked up in the sinuses. Also the chairs were hard as rocks, then we went to another place afterwards and the chairs were wire crates with wooden boards on them, = sore arse. Also was relying on a colleague for a lift home so had to wait until they were ready to go. Middle aged people problems 😔
Aw man , that doesn’t sound like a very good xmas party tbh. Definitely a good day to be resting up and taking it easy. I hope your workplace has climate control for tomorrow…
We’ve got no aircon so the boss has given us tomorrow off, so that’s something I guess. At least the food was ok last night!
Thank goodness! It’ll be good to get some pay and rest up without having to collapse from heat exhaustion…
G’day kits! I am too. Much >:(
This arvo I’m doing coffee and momo lunch with the old LT. Then, I’m probably going to sleep
Tomorrow is a busyish day. Packing to do, and boxes to deliver. 2 meetings. Also gotta grab a couple of last minute prezzies (which at this point are going to be blocks of chocolate). Then I’ll have about half an hour to refresh and take the shower I’m sure I’ll absolutely need before class time. Last class of the year, but also our last class on legal and ethical. Belgh. Big unit, not much time to cover or talk about most of it
What’s your plans?
Also, make sure you set your aircon to cold mode and not auto, if you’re using a splitty. Don’t want it actually heating up the place before it hits 26!
Coffee and momo, like Nepalese momos? Yum! Bad day to have to do so much packing and meeting, make sure you have lots of water and keep those chocolate blocks cool! Good thing you don’t need to do the whole switch-your-fridge-off-for-24-hrs bizzo as I presume you’re getting your own fridge at the new place. You’ll get through that class without a problem and feel heaps better on the other end of it, I’m sure!
My aircon is a splitty but doesn’t have an auto mode - most I’ve used don’t, you must manually switch it from cooling to heating or vice versa. My aunt in WA had this problem with the heatwave they’d just had, it was a tad moist and their evap cooler was useless and they were panicking over their splitty not working despite being recently serviced… turns out they’d left it set on heating. D’oh. Just 75yo things.
Yes! The old LTs boyfriend is Nepalese, and both of them go mad for momos. He (or probably both of them I guess) used to make their own momos at home, but are a bit time poor these days. Definitely gotta watch the water, I’m usually okay at keeping up on water intake but sometimes it’s hard when it’s busy busy. Not super sure I’ll have a particularly good class, everybody’s feeling pretty exhausted, and leg-eth is a tiring unit that’s for sure
That’s good, ours has an auto mode and everybody loved it until we all realized it means if it cools down by 1 degrees more than it was told to, it kicks the heating on and boils everyone til it’s a degree over 🙄
Im wrecked from lack of sleep so will be doing as little as possible. Probably guitar and Gibson stuff lol
Sounds like a beautiful Sunday to me 💟 wonder when Gibson will cotton onto the invaders in your back yard lol.
I bought them their own dry and wet catfood, so she has no grounds for complaint lol
I shall melt, most likely
Wishing you all the luck mate… you need movie vouchers or something so you can escape it all until Monday evening.
I did consider that option! But alas, nothing showing at my nearest theatre that I think I’d like. Never watched the first Moana, don’t think I’d enjoy Wicked(I hear it is good though), not super huge on superhero stuff lately and Kraven the Hunter is a Sony Marvel movie which don’t tend to be great… Maybe I should just pick a Chinese movie and go in blind hoping it has subtitles lmao
Hahaha you’d have to hope they have subtitles. Agree with you the current movie selection is pretty meh. I live opposite a cinema but haven’t felt like watching anything.
Not the most fun time of the year to just be chilling out at a shopping centre with everyone going bonkers for their Xmas shopping either tbh…
Yeah deffo. Don’t think I wanna idle in a shopping centre in plague season (that’s every season lately)
I’m trying to learn Chinese Mandarin, so I thought maybe an un-subtitled movie could be fine. I won’t be able to follow it, but I could focus on trying to discern tones and shit… But I checked and the movie is The Last Dance, which is Cantonese with subtitles.
Ooh, now you’ve got me googling it and this actually sounds like something I’d watch… I have a soft spot for HK cinema. No use for learning Mandarin but might be good fun nevertheless
Well today’s date only 30 so that’s fine, I’ll just have a fan on. Tomorrow I’m working from 11 to 630 so I’ll dodge all the heat in my nice ACd office
I envy your home that is comfortable with just a fan on at 30 (I was once the same…)
