This used to annoy me with my kids laptops. Changing from UK English to USA English and back where needed for some learning things they did, and then I’d forget when I’d borrow their laptops for something and wonder why certain punctuation didn’t work 🤦🏼♀️

ATMs in the EU used to have a bunch of flags for the assorted languages, with the Union Jack representing English. US tourists would complain and kick up a fuss that English wasn’t an option among the flags, because they are looking for the stars and stripes.
In any case, I never perceived it as a slight against me, or really anybody. I just get annoyed by this stupid US Defaultism crap. But your story makes sense, honestly wouldn’t expect anything more than that from the average US tourist.
