There are no penalties for parents or kids that flout this, kids can easily get around it with parents ids or vpns, and Albanese even admits that they will and that them being able to is beside the point. So… what is the point? It’s just performative security theatre and a convenient excuse to increase surveillance.
The Liberals are worse by far but both parties are terrible.
If this does apply to AZ, I wonder how Nath/lodion plan on handling it. I probably trust them a little more than Google/Facebook, but the idea of sending anyone my ID is terrifying to me. I think they might be angling towards using MyGovID (which they’ve now renamed “MyID”), where you send them a copy of every form of ID you have, then they’ll handle the verification through some kind of API. But unless I know for certain the only thing returned to whoever’s asking is “yes, this person is over the age of 16”, I’m not going to be using it. I’ll just use a VPN on everything
Nath/Lodion don’t need to know my name, and the government don’t need to know my username
Yeah. I’ve donated before, and I didn’t realise PayPal would publish my name, do I think Lodion probably does have my name in an email somewhere. But I don’t think it’s directly tied to the username I gave Kofi, so he’d need to go dig through it, then cross reference the dates/times/amounts to figure it out. Plus, it also exposed his name, so that makes me a little less worried about it
Don’t see why anyone would want to though, I’m really not that interesting and keep my name as well hidden as I can, no embarrassing old Facebook accounts to trawl through or anything
FWIW, I have paid/donated to things with pseudonyms before, and I’ve never had my bank block them before. You’re not meant to, and if your bank isn’t shit like mine, they should block it (especially if a credit card). Another option is using one of those visa gift card doo-dads, but idk if they work with PayPal
I think they’re forgetting that all the people they’re banning are going to be able to vote soon, a large portion the election after next. Depending on when the election is called, I’ll probably be voting in the coming election myself. They were already hanging on to my vote by the skin of their teeth - now they’ve gone and completely lost it, and I’m not even directly affected by their BS.
Sure makes my yearly VPN subscription worth it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Aussie Zone is definitely captured by the new laws because the definition of “age-restricted social media platform” is so broad.
However, the legislative rules (which are not published yet and can be changed at any time by the relevant minister) would likely exclude platforms below a certain size. The rules are the same document that will include Snapchat but exclude video games, for example.
I think once the rules are published there’s going to be a lot of criticism and, hopefully, revisions. It doesn’t make sense that Aussie Zone be so restrictive about user age.
Oh great so the small community of absolutely fascist incels planning the night of a thousand aryan rapes skate on by while julia childs cooking class gets a jackboot up the arse
Online gaming isn’t covered… as least according to one source. Lemmit DT Minecraft server? Some old free game and make a guild? 🤔
Then again it has similar issues to things like Discord in that it’s fast paced and hard to catch up on at your leisure. I know everyone has different work and sleep schedules.
I’d totally be down for an old school v bulletin forum if that could sneak under the radar in any way at all. Potentially even volunteering for mod services if absolutely necessary. However I’m not sure if the software or whatever is as secure as modern tech or whatever. Not really my field. Edit: Holy crap hosting isn’t necessarily cheap.
Edit 2: Oh man… what happens with places like Whirlpool :(
I wonder if aussie.zone will fall under the proof of age law now.
What an utter disappointment this government has been. Absolute reactive, populist nonsense.
No wonder they are rarely in power. Not that the Liberals are any better mind you.

Yeah, I’m cautiously watching too.
That reminds me. There was something about PayPal telling merchants your name and such, I have to go double check and deal with that too if so.
Data brokering has gone wild, everything is now blatantly galloping to squeeze as much as it can

It’s a massive barrier to me donating to stuff. I could spare a few dollars but am wary of risking my financial security or leaking my details.

I did once or twice with a prepaid but don’t take risks now
We can all be Simon.
Simon says why not lol

I hope it doesn’t. It’s very likely that I’ll choose to leave any platform requiring it rather than comply and I like it here
