At no point did he just sit down and say “Mark, let me explain everything to you. You may not agree with me. I dont expect you to, but my job is to protect the planet. What happens when the Viltrumites come back? Morals dont mean shit if the planet is destroyed.”

It’s the old trope of ‘no time to explain, trust me’.
I do think they’re trying to setup how Mark is hellbent on being a 180° opposite of his dad, and that’s the driving factor behind his decisions.
I have the comic books in compendium format…should probably read them at some point for context.
