Who decides it’s the International Day of (thing)? Not disputing it, just suddenly curious. My zoo calendar regularly says stuff like it’s the International Day of the (fauna) and I wonder who decides it.
The UN decides mostly, when it relates to humanitarian and human achievements, like “International Day of Women Judges”, or “International Day of Zero Waste”, or “International Day of Biological Diversity”.
For international days for [fauna], it depends. Sometimes it’s created by a person who has worked with certain species extensively or by well known advocates, or it is created by animal welfare groups. For example, World Animal Day was created by Heinrich Zimmerman in 1925, a cynologist (dog scientist, simply). Colleen Paige created International Dog Day, Mutt Day, and Pet Day.

Huh. That was pretty comprehensive, thanks for that!
I don’t know, but if anyone plays Bobby McFerrin at me I shall cheerfully eviscerate them. And send the bits to @[email protected] for repurposing.
i’m making a 🦴 broth
That is a really good question that I can not help you with. 🤷♀️
I feel like I should make some of them up when there’s no official international day.
Maybe somebody just says it loudly and nobody argues, so it’s official?
Surely it’s a HR stunt somewhere. Three work lunches to decide when International Spatula Day should happen.
