Fuck me, got up to feed the cats and use the loo and found that the house had been broken into - two of the windows and the back door were open.
Main thing is the cats didn’t escape, nothing’s been stolen and I’m fine, just a little shaky.

Oh that’s shit. I’d call the cops and your insurance company in any case.

Cops have been called, hadn’t thought of the insurance company.

Whatever you do, DO NOT tell the insurance company what you think might be missing over the phone. Tell them the cops have been called, and you’ll send through a list of missing items once you have it itemized.

They might try and trap you into listing things over the phone. Don’t say you don’t think anything is missing either. Take your time to put a list together, and be generous to yourself.

Rookie mistake. You can still salvage it. The burglars got away with power tools (not top of the line, but mid range), your extensive DVD porn collection (insurance company will give you cash equivalent) and a couple of laptop

              Sadly, you can’t claim cash.

      Glad you’re okay.

It’s really unnerving when that happens.

Yeah we’re lucky it’s never happened before, the house next door (when it existed) was done over twice.
Local Facebook group reports intruders and robberies regularly so I’ve been lucky thus far (and still am in a way).

Oh goodness, very glad that you and the cats are ok. It’s such an invasive feeling when that happens! Have you reported it to the police?

Yes, first thing. I called bob urgent and they switched me straight through to 000.
        Edit: non urgent.

Thanks. It appears that they didn’t get further than the back room and porch - must have seen the toilet light on.

Oh man the cats would be my worst fear. Take what you want, just don’t let the cats escape.

A little shaky - honestly I was more upset about the rat.
It might be carer’s reflex though - go into cope mode and fall apart later.
