Also of note Switch 2 won’t really have any competition.
I don’t consider the steam deck or anything else coming out to actually catch the attention of everyday people because they’re too obscure to people who aren’t deep into their tech and also pricing is a lot higher.
Ask a kid about Switch and they’ll know what it is and most likely have played one. They wouldn’t have any knowledge of any other portable console.

You might be surprised with at least the steam deck. Now you can buy them through steam they’re advertised right on the store homepage.
The alternatives might be a bit more obscure but anyone already playing games through steam should know about the deck
I would be surprised as the data does point to a massive gap between the sales of the 2 units.
As of September 30, 2024 146.04 million Nintendo Switch units have been sold.
The number of sales for the steam deck seem to be a little bit vague, it’s probably at 3 million or maybe 4?
I also believe it was only released here in Australia officially 2 months ago and only available in key countries.
The average person isn’t really looking at a Steam Deck if you ask me, it’s more of a niche product.
But they can both exist and cater to their respective audiences and demographics.
