Food pantry win today - I got a whole chicken & some crumbed tenders. This answers both my “what should I make for dinner” and “what should I take for work lunch tomorrow” questions.
Wish my area had a decent food pantry! For an area with such expensive real estate people here can be remarkably scummy. “Visitors” from an even scummier nearby suburb would most likely pillage everything and trash the pantry. We had several little libraries trashed in the last few years. Food donations around here are limited to well meaning church groups with their packages of mostly expired food. Sad.
There are definitely people around here that do that sort of thing too. Someone stole one of the cupboards once, and there was someone doing lovely things like hiding fish at the back of the cupboard. There are also people who will just take everything.
The lady who runs the pantry puts a lot of work into putting out just a little bit at a time of the good stuff so there is not a big amount to take at any one time. There is usually plenty of bread, other things are only occasional (or if you go at the right time in the evening when they are getting the supermarket deliveries there is more). I get a fair bit because I walk Mr Woof past it twice a day, but it’s often empty (except for bread).
No fridge or anything unfortunately. Mostly it is put out frozen & you can judge whether it still feels cold. Otherwise it is up to you to judge for yourself wheher you think it is ok based on smell etc. - and it is usually at/past expriy when donated to start with. Happily the chicken was still frozen solid when I got it, sometimes things are a bit more iffy.

Man… guess I have to put out a little at a time then. People suck
!
Score!
Silly question - how does the chicken stay cool and safe to eat? Is there like an esky or a public fridge
