Bedding begonias are pretty tough. Mine are in full sunlight and are pretty neglected, but still flower. Not like the tree begonias which can be a lot more picky about their living conditions.

Any recommended cultivars? I was always used to my mum’s collection of begonias needing a lot of fuss in the equatorial tropics - perfect semi shade or they’d be sad. I didn’t know they could be tough stuff.

Not really. There appears to be two kinds of plant - both called begonia. One is persnickety in its requirements and is def a tropical plant and needs to be kept frost free and preferably indoors. These are the ones with the beautiful large flowers. The other kind (mine) is a semi succulent with waxy leaves that certainly thrives on rough treatment. Has much smaller flowers that go all year here in Melbourne. I have seen the same plants in Bunnings, in a variety of colours. Mine are all pink flowers. Seagoon’s appear to be yellow. I don’t know the cultivar name as the plant was self sown in my garden when I bought the house, and I just chucked the little ones in pots where they now thrive. They do like a fair bit of water and liquid fertiliser, but I don’t give them any more than that or any other special treatment. Would you like some cuttings/baby plants of these? I have plenty to spare and I’m not working this week so could meet up at an eligible central location.
