This is your junior DT reporter Baku T. Baku here live from the scene of flinders street station with your hourly trains update. The current situation here at flinders street is still pretty busy, trains on most lines are now dropping back from a 10/20 minute frequency to an hourly one, however even with the extra services metro has failed to clear everyone out.
Over the last 10 minutes here at flinders street, I’ve observed a train reach capacity and have staff blocking off the doors because people just couldn’t fit in the train anymore. We also currently have delays of anywhere between 10-40 minutes because of earlier congestion. Trains on the Pakenham line earlier this morning hit a peak of departures every 1 minute and still weren’t able to cope with the sheet demand from all the NYE revelers attempting to get home.
Trains on all lines are currently very full, a problem which is only set to worsen as the network drops back to an hourly frequency. Platforms are also extremely congested.
That’s all I have for you for now. I will bring you further updates as the situation develops.
My area is a PITA to get back to without the bus, and first bus isn’t til 8 so I’ll be floating around til then. I was at flinders in the above and I’m in Camberwell now
