YouGov research for the Australian Conservation Foundation, found:
85% of parents worry about their children’s health and safety in extreme heat.
70% of parents have kept their child inside more often over the summer holidays, with higher numbers for parents of children aged 5 or younger (76%) and Queenslanders (75%) 67% of parents who kept children indoors had negative feelings including feeling confined (32%), stressed (26%), trapped (23%), anxious (21%), sad (21%) and overwhelmed (18%).
79% report heatwaves impact their family’s sleep, with 21% saying reporting significantly impacts children’s sleep and 58% saying it somewhat impacts their children’s sleep.
45% reported limiting the use of air conditioners or fans during heatwaves because of the cost of power bills.
Facebook/insta campaign with an ad featuring each one of these statistics targetted at parents in all demographics could be a next step to really drive the message.
Social media: All I can do is fear mongering over some irrelevant issue.

I would really like to see the stats renting vs owning a home, it looks like this lines up with the general population of renters vs owners
There has to be something done to incentivise landlords to install solar and aircons, it’s ridiculous imo to have homes without them in 2025 (especially in Queensland)

Hmm, not sure that’d be correct. Don’t have time to look, but last i saw renting population is around 1/3 of housing population.
I think the research presented in this article targeted parents, a subset of the general population. Given parents these days are older, and more established, i would assume the share of the parent set has ‘parents renting < 1/3’ (less than 1/3) renters.
I assume this because younger people are massively over-represented in the rental category, and they are less likely to have children.
Given our skin cancer rates, I feel that maybe my xiellenial generation should’ve spent more time indoors. Slip, slop, slap said existed but wasn’t enforced in any real way.
Both my sister and my husband’s sister have a couple of redheaded girls. Thankfully both my sister and BIL are also redheads, but those kids are slathered to fuck year round.
Hahaha, i know a few people like this.
Its so funny to me to see them lathering up on a cloudy day. I get it, and know its necessary, but it can still be funny to see the sunscreen come out on days most people wouldn’t think about it.
stares at you in redhead
Ha! I should’ve learned by now theres always a redhead just around the corner, but i haven’t!
