The CFMEU is being ripped apart based on claims that the police never investigated, that never saw a court, and in such a way that suspends the rights of workers within the union. Even if the claims are all true, it’s massive overreach that deals very direct damage to democracy and workers rights in this country.

Other non-CFMEU unions are also turning out in solidarity. This is about all our rights.

Didnt the CFMEU boss resign the second 60 minutes announced they were going to air an expose about him? Didnt they make demands the AFL sack the head of their coaching department? Didnt a CFMEU National member have to take administration over victoria cause of serious allegations of wrongdoing? Hasnt anyone who worked on a CFMEU site in the last, lets say FOREVER been well aware of the corruption and bullying?

Are unions good? Yes. Should the federal government get involved here? Maybe not. Has the union had EVERY chance to clean itself up over the years? Yes.

Again, these things need to be decided in court. Parliament is not court. This legislation is antidemocratic. It is not okay for the government to get involved like this. We have separations of government power to try and prevent things like what that poem is describing.

Even if every claim is true, this is not how this is meant to happen.

I agree, but would also point out the justice system is broken AF. Part of a much broader problem.

It totally is. But I don’t think breaking it even more is the solution here. So that’s why I’m out to march today with the CFMEU, and all the other unions in solidarity

Parliament has the same powers as a court. Look it up.

CFMEU has been a corrupt cesspit for years. The leadership keeps harping on about ‘workers rights’ to misdirect everyone from the visible corruption and extortion tactics that happen on site daily.

Anyone who has been on a CFMEU site over the past 10 years would have seen it. Anyone that claims not have seen it, is either blind or brainwashed.

The workers deserve better than the current leadership, that has been given plenty of chances to clean up.

The workers voted for this leadership and are out protesting today in support of it. The democratically elected union leadership was removed and union funds are being used by the non elected administrators. None of the allegations matter in the face of the fact that the next liberal government now has the power to destroy any union in the country at will without justification.

Same thing happens with corrupt councils.

It seems to me that the CFMEU has become a cult of personality with Setka, and not much else. In situations like this, the words ‘democracy’ lose their meanings when the voters are heavily discouraged to vote for anyone else. See North Korea as an example.

You’re working under the assumption the accusations have been substantially proven. They haven’t. They simply haven’t, and this witchhunt achieves nothing.

I support the right to be gay. I support freedom of religion. I support transparency and accountability in government.
