I met up with a close friend tonight. We were talking about my job search and he alluded to the idea that maybe I should just give up and go back to menial labour.

This is someone who I used to consider family.

Stuff like this is why I keep people at arm’s length.

I echo dumblederp on this. I also like menial labour, and the money I get is enough to support my family and have some “treats” if I’m careful. But I’m on the wrong side of 50 and facing the reality of waking up in the morning with aches and pains which aren’t going away, and which are a worry for the future and for my longevity in the workforce itself. Everyone I work with who has a previous qualification/actual profession has quit and gone back to that profession because of the pain and the work being just so hard.

I like menial labour but it just doesn’t pay well enough. I’m no longer prepared to wear my body for mediocre wages while boss makes bank. Plus at the moment I’ve a hernia and am missing intense exercise pretty hard.

Although I can see how it could come across as unsupportive, they may not have meant it in a bad way? A job that’s paying the bills is a positive thing, plus social interaction and keeping busy. I’ve done plenty of basic jobs myself over the years, and come from a working class family, and would never think less of anyone because of their job title. If it’s a close friend then maybe you could ask what they meant by it, but maybe they were just seeing that you might be getting down about the job hunting and were suggesting alternatives?

He meant I should just give up trying to get a “good job”. Like his job. Despite the fact we work in the same industry.
