Just witnessed this moronic person next to me use his phone on 5G while we were descending into Sydney. I don’t think he switched his phone to flight mode at all during the flight, was just waiting for the reception to kick in during the flight. I wouldn’t call myself an anxious flyer but I really didn’t like witnessing this behaviour. Maybe this is more normal than I think?

Yeah I’d guess there’s a few on every flight and planes aren’t falling out of the sky every day.

was it a Boeing? That’d be a bigger concern for me to be honest.

It’s a funny thing. The signals from a dozen or so phones are not a problem for a plane. But, there have been no formal safety ratings on hundreds of phones using cellular service while in-flight. It’s even probable that there is no interference from everyone using cellular networks, but they don’t trust aircraft safety to “probable”.

So, they tell people to turn on flight mode and trust in the 90% who do as asked. Don’t worry about the 10% on their phones, they’d ban phones in the cabin if there was any doubt at all.

Qantas has wifi on planes now so people could use wifi calling. If they don’t mind getting hosted and sworn at ….
