3 books in total. The first two I strongly recommend. The third one I found to be weaker. Warning - they’re a confronting read. But if you could cope with the Handmaid’s Tale then these are probably fine.
The synopsis definitely reads like a harder edged version of Handmaid’s Tale. We read that for literature in year 7 or 8 (still not really coping with the reality of it coming to pass in my lifetime).
Have you ever read any of Octavia Butlers’ Parable series? It’s been a while for me and my memory is shot but I recall them being very highly regarded speculative fiction, also with astute observations of where humankind is headed when SHTF. Don’t think I’m ready to reread them atm with how I’ve been feeling about the world lately
Yep. I liked some of them, but found others a bit too speculative. Ms Butler is good, don’t get me wrong, but Ms Elgin is better at the craft of writing.
Suzette Haden Elgin’s Native Tongue series would be right up your alley
Ooh thanks for the recommendation, it really does sound exactly like what I’d be interested in. Will hunt it down on libraries

Harder edge is right. Some very very acute analysis and interpretation throughout the whole series imo.

EDIT: the above comes with big IMO.
