My washing machine has a Volkswagen setting
On normal, 40C, it takes 3 hours and does energy efficient wash but 30C and 50C (and any other temp) uses far more water, far more power, and only takes an hour

Yeah, my parents purchased a Miele.
M&D initially wanted to use the Miele app to control the washing machine.
I explained that having an IoT device connected to the same network on which they performed their internet banking was a *bad* idea. (Would Miele ever bother to patch flaws in the firmware?)
Plus, they’d be telling Miele where they lived, how often, and how, they used the machine as well as probably telling Miele their WiFi password.
I *think* that Miele’s power and water consumption algorithms use the same mathematical formulae as Douglas Adams’ ‘bistromaths’.

I’ve never really bothered much with appliance ratings.
Any time I see star ratings on anything that the govt has been involved with I automatically assume it’s a load of bullshit that was guided by industry with their wants put well ahead of consumer needs. At best star ratings just dumb down actual metrics.

Home energy star ratings. Why not just state use the passivhouse standard? Or just state energy used and air tightness in changes per hour etc.
Vehicle star ratings where fucking human crusher 4wds still somehow gets 5 stars for vulnerable road user protection because it has some sensors in it.
I absolutely paid attention to these things, even spending more on more efficient appliances after figuring out the break even time on the price difference.
I consider the power usage of everything in my home. I’m down to 300w idle draw from more than 700w.
I’m pretty annoyed to find out the star scheme is bullshit :(
