Posting this a day early while I remember.

Have you found a good bargain lately, made a repair, or figured out something that works for you?

This is also for any topic requests, suggestions, or tips that might not require their own thread.

If i had a garden still, that would be tomatoes, basil, capsicum, chillos, zucchinis, and maybe a broadbean or three. And marigolds - they go well with tomatoes and basil (IIRC they attract the same pests so protect the food plants)

I used my speed weave for the first time to darn some socks. Worked really well.

Sydneysider visited SM marketplace for some discount meat. Prices on the grass fed meat specials were good, though it seemed to me they included the weight of the tray in the weight. Quality looked OK, but I have to wait till I’ve eaten some. The beef fillet looked very nice, and looking forward to giving that a go 🤤

Check their Facebook page for latest specials. They will put up specials that only run for a day or two there.

With some other purchases from supermarkets, it averages to about $3/meal (meat only).

And that doesn’t include any canned fish which is where the real protein/$ is. I don’t eat tuna too much because of heavy metals. And for sustainability and omega-3 reasons my personal bang for buck is canned mackerel.

So, looks like I can make it another month without resorting to pet food.

    Frugal on! 😬

Canned fish is good with potatoes which are also cheap. Over the top of a microwave ‘baked’ potato is a quick meal.

Or if drained and mixed into mashed potatoes you can bake it with a topping of cheese (steamed veg for side dish) or coat the mix in breadcrumbs and fry up some fishcakes.

I used to use tuna in oil which is quite a fatty salty canned fish, no idea how it would taste with mackerel or salmon.

I was having skin issues with a multipack of scented soap (trying to go cheap as possible) so I donated the rest of the pack and am using the initial bar up on washing my hands. It’s happened a few times and I don’t want the scent on my clothes by putting them in a drawer. So I may also use unwanted used bars to ‘wax’ sewing thread or for washing out stains before putting clothes in the laundry.

The bristles of my cat’s self cleaning brush had slipped behind the guard, getting crushed and trapped or going through the wrong slots so it wouldn’t sit flat. Common issue. I tried to manually pull them back into alignment with a bobby pin but the wire bristles were badly bent and needing to have the guard fully lifted up meant getting one fixed but another would slip behind.

The back securing the guard was simply clipped on so I removed it and took the guard off. Straightened the wire bristles with some needle nose pliers. Now I could maybe ease the bristles back through in their proper rows to get the guard fully in place and then snap the back on to get the guard under tension again… but it would just happen again. I decided for now to also remove the tension spring and just use as a standard slicker brush.
