There’s set standards about how loud fire alarms must be to be compliant. It’s meant to be really loud and piercing because it’s supposed to wake people up and be something that’s hard to ignore. Often people have been saved because neighbours heard the alarm. Not fun if you have to listen to it for extended period of time though.
