    Has this ever happened before? Has the opposition leader ever lost their seat in an election. It feels huge

          The thing is, he does actually seem to have been a very good local member. He was dreadful as opposition leader, but as “the local rep” in a single seat he was competent and conscientious.

          It’s a weird dichotomy. His performance as a single member might have won him a longer leash to be opposition leader

            I didn’t know he did porkbarrelling in his own seat. I know it’s what has kept Barnaby Joyce in all this time. It’s the acknowledgement that you operate on a national stage but you’re voted in by your seat. I wish more politicians would take that on board, even if it’s for selfish reasons.

      Well he wasn’t opposition leader, but John Howard as PM in 2007.

        I heard that on the radio. The liberals lost anyway but imagine the prime minister losing but the party wins
