neighbours nearby say they purchased their homes on the understanding it was a purely residential neighbourhood and they’re worried noisy customers might start queuing in their street and create a hazard

This might be the most nimby thing i’ve ever read. Also, whats this suburbia mindset they’ve got? They purchased their homes with the understanding a cafe won’t be on their block. Please.

They bought a parcel of land on that block, not the whole thing. Theres a limit to how much say people should have over what their neighbours do with their land.

Also, “noisy customers”? What kind of cafe is, caffeine and dubstep?

patrons would have to walk through the kitchen to use the residential tenant’s toilet, as it was the only one on site. He said it made the application unapprovable

This seems to be the nimby’s only fair point. Cafe owners need to pony up, build a new toilet off the side of the building or something.

It’d depend on the type of cafe. A hole in the wall coffee shop that just serves take away drinks and maybe a muffin wouldn’t be expected to offer a toilet.

Full meal service is different, of course. Then again, those hidden gem cafes are all over the suburbs in Melbourne and the locals love them. I can’t see why anyone would be against one of those in the community, either.

I actually thought if you served food and drink like this there was something in the code to say you had to offer a toilet.

I’m gona name it the “coffee causes movements principle” for now ;)

To play devils advocate on this, I would kind of understand some of the concerns if it’s the type of cafe that garners a cult following like North Street Store does.

If it’s open during regular cafe hours of 7am to 3pm, then the impact is probably minimal though.

Fair point, it could increase foot traffic and decrease ease of parking. But allow me a retort, for fun, or at least an excuse to have another go at the ridiculousness of some nimbys and how this article captures some of the ridiculous stands they’ll take at times.

North Street Café seems quite rare and unique. A fair mind shouldn’t believe thats going to open up next door. In the world of cafes even excluding all but independent stand alone cafe’s there are only a few that would match North Street Café (by the sound). And even if the proposed does, then we have what i’m going to call the nimby-conundrum.

The North Street Café kind of place adds a unique value to the nimbys own house and neighbourhood value, of course i’m talking Gentrification. And, if theres one thing nimbys hate more than loud music its low or god forbid, falling house prices. A gentrifying suburb is possibly the surest way to maintain and increase your house value. Therefore the question then becomes can the nimby stomach the extra foot traffic to see their house price go up.

My guess is they wouldn’t connect the two of course. But this whole comment is really an excuse to type nimby-conundrum.
