@useless_modern_god @StudChud I was one of those who only ever popped into r/melbourne when there was a specific local reason to. A bit like Whirlpool forums but not for tech, just for local Melbourne-specific stuff.

I like the integration of these more general conversations about general Life Stuff here, and feel like there’s a lot more that I am likely to comment on if a question is one I can answer / have some experience with.

I like the !Melbourne vibe and because it’s in my main Fediverse feed, I see content that I just wouldn’t have gone to r/melbourne for.

Yeah same. I’ve only been on the DT for a couple of years now and love the fact many people moved to Lemmy. Contributing content doesn’t feel as daunting here.

Do you mainly post on mastodon?

@useless_modern_god yup… I used to be very active on Reddit between 2017-2019, experimented briefly with Mastodon in 2018, but moved here pretty permanently when Space Karen bought Twitter last year. it’s been fascinating watching the new waves each time he does a new idiotic thing, and the #Rexxit wave was even more exciting as it brought a different crowd and boosted the #Threadiverse, which is really good for the Fediverse ecosystem. I’m now experimenting with #firefish but am not sold yet, though the UI is very slick.

The twitter type platforms must be receiving heaps of new people lately. I’m not really seeing that first hand because mainly post here and Kbin. Also just got an invite to Tildes recently so that keeps me busy.

What does firefish do that Mastodon doesn’t?

@useless_modern_god yup, it’s such a bizarre period on social media right now.

Firefish is based on a fork of Misskey, a popular Fediverse microblog platform in Asia, especially Japan.

It’s graphically quite pretty, and I’ve been told it allows Quote Boosts though I haven’t worked quite how on the instance I created an account on…
