Some people really are not competent at bin management, and definitely don’t deal well with changes to the system. You should count yourself luck they don’t also put out the small kitchen caddy.

During the first month or so I did try to rationalise it: Knox (Boronia) has a glut of blocks building 5 or more two bedroom, 1 garage townhouses, and most have no outdoor space (it got used by the obligatory water tank and shed/box.)

With no backyard to mow, they didn’t have or need a green waste bin, but this year they’ve had to take one, and there’s nowhere to put it. To make things worse, the waste bin is now a fortnightly pickup, and anyone with a pet now has two weeks of ripeness instead of one.

Over the border in Maroondah they have gone for keeping the landfill bin weekly and having the recycling and green waste fortnightly, which means the food scraps build up for two weeks which some people are not happy about. I am all for recycling, but I’m not sure the present solution of lots of big bins for every household works well, and the introduction of the purple glass bins are just going to add to the problem.
