Four Corners on the ABC is doing a programme tonight on gender distress in children. Very difficult topic for a lot of people, but there’s people here that might be interested. Link to article 4 corners. Airs at 8.30 pm on FTA also on iview shortly after. Four corners usually does a pretty good job of airing all sides of a debate.

I didn’t think it was too bad. They did give a fair bit of air-time to anti-trans viewpoints but I found their arguments vague and unconvincing. The very specific case stories were very humanising.

They engaged with the anti-trans movement and allowed completely baseless claims to be aired as fact.

Which baseless claims were aired as fact?

The “22% desistance” rate in the Westmead study was immediately called out as misleading and dangerous.

I didnt see anything from Jillian Spencer or Dianna Kenny that presented as “facts” they just seemed to say they were “concerned” and that they feel “gender affirming care” is harmful but they didnt have any data. Actually everyone seems to say the other sides dont have enough evidence to back up their viewpoint.

It was pretty clear to me who was open to new evidence, and who cares more about young people. It wasn’t the people speaking at rallies getting cheered on by people waving signs with hateful slogans.

Not to mention the Spencer speech was intertwined with shots of Pauline Hanson, which would have instantly discredited her for a lot of viewers.

What is with the trans community and Media Watch? I’ve seen this shit before in the Australia subreddit and it’s always the most unhinged, speculative conspiracy theory stuff. I don’t understand how anyone can regularly watch that show and come to the conclusion that Paul Barry is trying to use his platform to spread an anti-trans ideology.

Media Watch has reported on trans issues in the media several times, and in each instance it’s been focused on the role of the media only. They have, on several occasions, been heavily critical of sections of the media attempting to whip up anti-trans hysteria - the complete opposite of what some people seem to think they are doing. I get why people in the trans community are volatile and defensive, but they only hurt themselves when they go off on these bizarre witch-hunts based on little to no evidence.
