The first Australian response to Trump was denial, then (unsuccessful) bargaining. Now there’s anger and depression as the tariffs sink in. Eventually must come acceptance.
Just rip that bandaid off, we’re going into an economic crisis anyways, at least let’s get rid of our dependence on American products and influence so we can start being our own country.
Depending on the US for anything is bad policy these days. I’d love to see the entire rest of the world collectively exclude them from the global economy. But of course the oligarchs won’t allow that.
Vote with your AUD as much as possible as a consumer. Even a 10% change in behaviour will shake the fuckers up.

We have a federal election next month, with candidates that have a lot of similarities with the US situation last November. It’s going to be a good indicator of what kind of country Australians want.
We’ve got heaps of land available. We should be doing more manufacturing and materials processing here. Selling ore is a joke when we should be selling refined product. Edit: And paying locals to refine it.
Just tax their(and all international) company earnings in Australia properly and put proper royalties on gas and mineral exports.

I hope we don’t end up putting retaliatory tariffs on goods sold by American companies that are actually made in China. iPhones and Pixels are the one that comes to mind first. All that would do is harm Australian consumers and cause the cost of living to increase, because I don’t think people will turn around and buy a Samsung instead. Well, maybe people looking to buy a Pixel but not an iPhone. I’m pretty sure Apple pays most of their corporate taxes in Ireland anyway.
As well, tariffs on American pharmaceuticals would be pretty silly, because it’s the government that’s going to foot the bill, when they’re the ones collecting the tariff anyway, so it’d just be a ridiculous cyclical situation.
