Pretty much, but I am basically still at the point of working out which programs I need to install to run anything like that, so I am a long way off. I expect it to take a while to figure out which is ok, but I am also a bit worried about whether I am heading in the right direction - I don’t want to invest hours/days/weeks learning to use JS and find out I’m going in the wrong direction.

I have the code from GitHub, I have found a lemmy-js client on join-lemmy.org, and have a tutorial on LinkedIn Learning that starts with what programs to install to use JS through to basic programming. If I put those together am I likely to end up in roughly the right place to make an automated thread?

That is a good starting point, for getting a bot running locally. I’m more than happy to look at the JS as well.

I would also be looking for somewhere with free NodeJS PAAS hosting as well (heroku / vercel), so that the host computer doesn’t need to be kept on all the time.

Fabulous, good to know I am heading in the right direction. Step 1: create automated thread. Step 2: recreate hidden penis bot Step 3: create bot army and take over the world. I got this.
