Travel cautions exist for a reason. They were probably looking for adventure and liked the idea of a spicy travel destination. I think we get a bit sheltered in Australia and don’t realise how real it can be in the rest of the world. Suspect we’ll never find out what happened, the cartels have the Mexican police on payroll.
I think a lot of Australians get complacent overseas, we live in a relatively safe country that we forget it’s not like that everywhere. This tragedy really makes you think twice about where to travel.
I always thought murders at tourist destinations were pretty rare, cartels and other professional criminals don’t want to attract attention because their own federal government will feel compelled to investigate and act as a matter of international diplomacy.
