Years ago, we had some young dudes going around saying they’re from the council (they weren’t) and that we have to pay them $40 to paint our house number on the curb. They got upset when we said no and told us we’d get a fine from the council. They got even more upset when I said, let me ring the local council to verify that this actually a thing.

Had the same about a decade and a half ago. A lot of neighbours took them up and the numbers wore off in about 6 months heh.

We were one of the few that refused. And yes, about 6 months later all gone.
Good scam though. Get some spray paint and stencils, drive around and make a few hundred bucks in a few days.
