One summer many years ago I was planning on flying to Hobart, but the flight was diverted to Burnie. I hired a bike from a shop on the main street there, and cycled my way down the east coast to Hobart. Stayed in B&Bs overnight, who were kind enough to do me up a packed lunch for the next day. Put bike on the bus back to Burnie when I got to Hobart, and, after a few days there, flew back to Melbourne. Was totally spontaneous and rather delightful. Not sure one could do this nowadays but back then was definitely before the airbnb revolution.
One of the most charming chuckles I’ve ever had was overheard in one of those B&Bs - the manager telling the cook to make a lunch for the visitor from Australia.
