Ok great. Steam and other game platforms are experiencing a crackdown on nsfw and LGBTIA games due to pressure from Mastercard and this was incited by the terf/swerf group Collective Shout. Pretty sure PayPal is doing the same thing.
It already happened to Tumblr.
This on top of incoming laws demanding government id for access to social media or search engine sign-ins.
It’s a real slippery slope from here. This authoritarian/surveillance/censorship shift has implications for anyone who is queer or trans, all kinds of creators, artists, anyone politically subversive, protesters, whistleblowers, sex workers or anyone who prefers/has reasons to maintain their privacy.
This is probably going to start affecting access to sexual health education and reproductive health options as well. Queer topics are automatically considered nsfw and this will probably extend to queer and trans support resources.
Payment processors, activist groups and fundies are basically going to control what you’re allowed to read, watch, look at or post. While you’re going to be monitored more closely and Google is going to slurp up (and sell or leak) yet more of your sensitive data.
If you think this is purely about removing SA/CSEM material, getting rid of ‘gross stuff’ or protecting kids you’ve missed the point.
Ironically this is the sort of thing Gamergate thought women/feminists/journalists were doing to games.
Just putting on record that Melinda Tankard Reist and Collective Shout are not really feminists and are more of a controversial fringe group that aren’t accepted by a lot of feminists. Being as they’re SWERFs and TERFs you could even say they’re a hate group.
There is a campaign of calling Mastercard and a Change dot org petition. Apparently this was kicked off in the first place by Collective Shout calling them ~1000 times.
I’m not sure if I’m allowed to link but I’m sure clever folks can find more info.
But yeah it’s global and is already in place on a lot of platforms as of 2018 due to FOSTA and SESTA so idk if Australians can do much about American platforms and the Aussie laws are getting pushed through regardless.
Also as of today the UK government has implemented age verification for UK citizens to access Bluesky so these changes can and will affect the Fediverse. Once the Australian government learns what the Fediverse even is we’re probably next.
I agree that there’s some heinous stuff on the internet which shouldn’t be platformed and there’s a real problem with kids and teens accessing inappropriate content but that is being used as a vehicle for some insidious shit.
Internet censorship and surveillance

only if we let them
