    Red Rooms (2024) movie review

A French Canadian psychological thriller (horror?)

A story about a woman’s obsession with an extremely disturbing murder trail. The accused is a man who tortures and kills young girls while live streaming on the dark web.

It’s a hideous and creepy pretext for a horror movie, however there is absolutely no gore, or jump scare, or boogie man under the bed.

It’s a story about Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariépy). A very smart and attractive woman whose entire life starts to revolve around this trail and her fascination with the killer, the victims family, other serial killer groupies and true-crime junkies.

She is cold, calculated, and technically proficient. A cross between Patrick Bateman and Lisbeth Salander.

In the end, Kelly-Anne is able to facilitate some modicum of justice, but at a sadistic cost. The real mystery here is not the killer in the courtroom but what Kelly-Anne’s motivations are.

This isn’t a movie with clear answers and that might turn people off. It’s a slow burn. It’s ambiguous.

And I’m still thinking about it.
