• In short: Asset Energy Pty Ltd says it’s committed to a drilling project to extract gas off the NSW coast, despite government opposition.
  • The Petroleum Exploration Permit 11 (PEP 11) would allow 4500 square kilometres of seabed between Newcastle and Sydney to be searched for natural gas reserves.
  • What’s next? The NSW government will introduce a bill to prohibit seabed petroleum and mineral exploration and recovery in NSW coastal waters.

PEP-11 was such electoral poison even Promo came out against it. The ship has sailed.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The gas producer behind a controversial offshore exploration project says it remains committed to the venture, despite the New South Wales government moving to ban drilling and mining in state waters.

The Minns government will introduce a bill aiming to stop the Petroleum Exploration Permit 11 (PEP 11) project, but Asset Energy Pty Ltd says it still intends to operate in Commonwealth waters further out to sea.

The state government seeks to amend the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 to prohibit seabed petroleum and mineral exploration and recovery in NSW coastal waters, which extend about five kilometres from shore.

The government said the legislation was designed to prevent environmental disasters, such as oil spills, and avoid the greenhouse gas emissions associated with petroleum extraction.

In June last year, Liberal Pittwater MP Rory Amon introduced a bill proposing to ban licences for offshore drilling and mining.

On Tuesday, Advent Energy executive director David Breeze said the company remained committed to “safely and sustainably” developing gas resources in Commonwealth waters more than 20 kilometres off the NSW coast.
