If you had to cancel Netflix (or never had it) Tubi is free with ads and you don’t have to download anything or sign up. I don’t remember there being ads for me, or if there were it wasn’t enough to remember.

I will admit the stuff on there mostly isn’t that great. At least for my interests. But have a dig around, you might find a trashy cult classic or something just ok to have on in the background.

If YouTube is pissing you off with intrusive ads and you don’t want to pay (I don’t) they also have ambient relaxation videos like of a crackling fire.

Ps. There are also library based options but I know less about that as I never bothered to set it up and they’re also expensive for libraries. (Kanopy was free with a library card or student login but is shutting down because the cost of so many people using it.)

But I guess if more people use them it can justify more public library funding, so… I don’t know. If that sounds good maybe try it.

I’m also considering checking out Plex.

I’ll just add that if you’re on Android, NewPipe still works after the youtube adblock blocking changes and on desktop there is FreeTube. Also PSA: do not search for FreeTube with Safe Search on Moderate on DuckDuckGo.

Tubi is really quite terrible, I do not recommended people use it to replace Netflix (or any other mainstream service). Only watch it to scratch that “so bad it’s good” itch. Just sail the high seas and enjoy your life. Or if you really have a problem with that, buy a cheap DVD player from an op-shop or something and borrow DVDs from your local library.

Yeah, it is pretty bad. The only thing I really found of value was Reanimator for a trashy horror flick.

I don’t sail the high seas because I don’t want to stress about the risks (or very likely forget an important precaution).

I do have a usb cd/dvd reader bought for ripping cds but it doesn’t work well so may see if the old desktop is still working and can be promoted to dvd duty

The only time I’ve ever watched something on there in full was when ‘Keeping Mum’ with Rowan Atkinson and Maggie Smith was in the rotation. That was actually a decent film, way above the average quality.

I don’t sail the high seas because I don’t want to stress about the risks (or very likely forget an important precaution).

You’re right to be cautious, but Australia is generally a fairly low risk country with regards to prosecution of copyright infringement so realistically you would most likely be fine. With torrenting there is always some level of risk due to copyright trolls monitoring and logging IP addresses they find in the swarm, so a VPN is a precaution I would always recommend. But in terms of sites like FMovies and others, they generally pull directly from file sharing sites so you are not actively engaging in file sharing when you use them. Because of this users aren’t targeted in the same way and the approach in Australia has just been to block them through DNS filtering (which can be easily circumvented by adjusting browser settings). There is very little (if any) risk to using these sites without a VPN, so if you have a smart TV they are a really simple alternative. You can bookmark them in your browser and watch through there, or through a laptop with an HDMI cable. The only downside is that the rips are generally limited to low bitrate 1080p and below, so the video and audio quality is not great. Then again, many people do not care about or notice this.

Ah ok, thanks for explaining! I might still steer clear but it’s good to know

Just watched American Mary and Ginger Snaps might be coming. Also check out Reanimator. I didn’t think much of this service but it’s looking up
