I wonder if, being attracted to smoke, the insects get disrupted by things like cool leaf burnoffs that would create similar smoke without being hot or large enough to creat the breeding conditions they are looking for?

Sounds like there are some unknowns there. They did mention the beetle that can detect heat and would probably find an area that is suitable. Perhaps a cooler fire would mean newborn predation just isn’t as suppressed, letting them survive but not thrive?
I don’t think we are in any risk of not having hot fires as much as we would like to.
