The distinctive jacket worn by Bob Hawke when he celebrated Australia's upset win of the America's Cup in 1983 was, in fact, designed by a 23-year-old architecture student to parody nationalistic fervour.
It must be surreal to be the designer and original owner of something so iconic.
I’m not positive. I sure didn’t go on the sub that first visit. The crowds were insane, we were lining up for 2 hours to get in, and I had about 20 minutes inside. I definately remember Australia II being there. I was surprised at how small it was. That boat was massive in my mind. I’m not sure about the jacket, but it probably was there.
It was a fun day. There was also a Million paws walk that same day, We had my dog with me. There were lots of dogs around. It was not a boring line experience with the carnival atmosphere.
The museum opened in 2002. I was there on that first day. Which was nearly 20 years after the Americas Cup.
