Yay! Pilot light - if it’s like my old gas water heater, there’s a ignition button you push a few times and hold once you hear gas, then watch for the flame to appear underneath and continue to hold the button for a bit, then release.
Also account for the time for the water to heat up, so maybe do this 24 hours before you need hot water.
My old water heater used about 16 matches and a complicated pattern of pressing and releasing the gas button. It never occured to me new ones would self light.
It is an instantaneous heater, so no waiting required.
