This post is for voting on /c/rage’s Lemmyvision 2 song nomination.

Over the past few weeks, our community has submitted nominations, and we have until April 1 to pick a winner. Our Lemmyvision representative, @Gorgritch_umie_killa, has delegated our election to an independent agency, the Aussie.zone Eureka Commission (AEC).

Anyone who has recently commented a few times on aussie.zone before today is allowed to vote. (This includes, for example, some quokk.au users and various Australian Lemmy users on other instances)

This election uses preferential Instant-Runoff Voting[wiki] just like our federal elections. Put simply, this means that if your [1] choice has no chance of election, your vote then runs over to your [2] choice, and so on, so there’s no disadvantage in picking an unpopular song you love for your first votes, your vote is not ‘wasted’ at all. Vote sincerely.

A couple of the nominations weren’t released during 2024, we’ve received confirmation from the organiser that they’re allowed!

Here are the entries. Please listen to them all before voting:

Here is the ballot template for you to fill in. Copy and paste it as a new reply to this post, and number ALL boxes from 1 to 10 in order of your choice. [1] is your first preference, [10] is your last preference.

Woah! @[email protected] that is so detailed! 😂

I reckon, yhanks to your work here, Aussie Zone must win the competition for most detailed competition for an Instance’s nomination!

I rind it interesting how many rounds with no movement there were in the end.

I think we’ve hit on a really great and original song for the winner though. I’d never heard of Gurridyula before this. And i bet with a name like “From the River to the Sea” there hasn’t been much radio airtime for it. But the lyrics alone are really fuckin Good!

My pleasure! I know it was a bit over-the-top but I’m glad aussie.zone took it and had a good time. Plus, hey, hopefully someone here learned a bit more about our election system. Definitely the most detailed poll of the lot!

Apart from the upcoming election, some of my interest came from learning about different voting systems a few years ago, Nicky Case made a fun interactive Explorable Explanation of different voting systems and their perks a few years back. Luckily we had a clear winner, but if that wasn’t the case, using a preferential system would have helped us pick a nomination that most people were happy with, and push people away from the ‘tactical voting’ we see overseas with First Part The Post systems.

I rind it interesting how many rounds with no movement there were in the end.

I was surprised when I saw it too. Since there were only 7 votes and two clear standouts, most songs had no primary votes, so the computer program dutifully went through the motions of eliminating them one by one and handing all of their 0 votes to no-one.

I think we’ve hit on a really great and original song for the winner though. I’d never heard of Gurridyula before this. And i bet with a name like “From the River to the Sea” there hasn’t been much radio airtime for it. But the lyrics alone are really fuckin Good!

Same here, I hadn’t heard of them. It’s no surprise to anyone that I find its messages relatable and purposeful, but even putting that completely aside, the internal rhyme/assonance, flow and wordplay are very skilled from a poetry perspective, without getting cryptic in the process (contrast with something like MF Doom’s Figaro - lyrical technique mastery but I only understand about half of it). I would completely understand if people voted against it because it’s musically limited (backbeat is fine for its purpose but not impressive, the vocal performance has a fair amount of dynamic but isn’t bloody Take On Me, and at the end of the day I wouldn’t listen to an instrumental version of the song) but on the other hand, I’d take a lyrically deep song over vapid catchy pop hits any day.

And, of course, thanks for letting me run this fun experiment!
