  • it’s not that bad tbh. Some tips

    1. follow directions for bleaching exactly, make sure to get it evenly on your hair and do NOT go over the time
    2. depending on the dye, you can go over the time and it’ll just make it darker and last longer. This has been the case with the plant based dyes i’ve used.
    3. hand mirror helps get your back, otherwise get a friend to help
    4. make sure you got gloves, a towel you are willing to sacrifice to the Colors, and some soap for your counters nearby
    5. cover your workspace with something (sacrificial towel) before you begin. If you get some dye on you or your bathroom try to wash immediately. if not, make a paste of baking powder and water and leave it on the stain, then wipe off later.
    6. Your hair will grow back, so don’t worry too much about damaging it. That said, use a deep conditioner if you end up bleaching your hair.
    7. if you’re bleaching, build up the grease in your hair first. I’d do 2-3 days of grease buildup (to protect scalp), bleach, wash out. Shampoo but DO NOT condition, even though it hurts. There’s some hair science about the cuticle being open after bleaching and that makes it better at absorbing the dye. Immediately apply dye after your hair drys. Alternatively, if your bleached hair is far too icky to handle, you could deep condition after bleaching, wait at least one wash cycle, then shampoo, then dry hair and apply dye. Just try to apply when your hair isn’t conditioned for best absorption. I’m not a hair scientist or anything, just regularly dye my hair for fun.
    8. dyed hair bleeds when washed. It’s fine. Just be prepared to use your sacrifice towel for drying your hair and you may need to clean out the shower again.
