The resulting map shows huge swaths of deeply disadvantaged locations across the nation’s 3,000 counties, places that are mostly located outside of the largest U.S. cities yet which share some traits: A history of resource extraction, unequal educational opportunities, a breakdown of social bonds, violence and local corruption.
The “colonies” described in this study are the heart of rural, red, America. If you want to see conservative politics in action, this is where you find it.
Car dependent, nothing but fast food, poor infrastructure, few jobs, zero entertainment, a severe lack of healthcare facilities, bad schools, and more.
Rural America is being left behind and it’s because they keep voting for Republicans who absolutely do not care about their well-being.
Because those of us who could vote with our feet DID. Stop blaming those left behind. If you improve those areas, a lot of us would go back home and you’d see the politics change.
Are the voters not responsible for the people they elect? Why should they be free of blame just because they can’t afford to move away?
I live in Ohio and you can definitely see this if you focus in on the state. Cleveland has a massive medical industry but the rural parts of the state it’s like a completely different world.
Was wondering how this would be spun as “republican bad”. There we have it.
Poor people don’t get as healthy food, as good exercise, living conditions, or medical care as rich people. I am shocked. SHOCKED.
My thoughts were the same.
Like no shit poor people are going to have a lower life expectancy.
Then I see OPs comment. I can’t say I’m surprised.
To some people all the worlds problems belong to one political party, it’s just their worldview. Republicans are just as guilty. Republicans act like you’re oppressing them if you express yourself in any way they don’t approve of.
I got called a Nazi by multiple people on a non political sub the other day because I said I was left on social issues but was right on some economic issues.
Like I said, either way it’s very closed minded imo.
You’re correct. It’s well known and documented that educated and successful people live in cities and vote left. Poor, uneducated people live in rural American and vote right. If you don’t like the results of ‘Pub policies then maybe you ought to examine why you keep voting for them. Until then, it’s informative for the average reader to understand reality. Even if reality hurts your own personal feelings.
You’re just making dumb assumptions. Not American, not a republican, not a conservative. There are lots and lots of poor and uneducated people living in cities and voting left. You’ll find lots of them sleeping on the street in those cities too.
