I was taking to someone last week who has been advised their soil is not safe for vegetables as it used to be a dump. Covered over landfills can create problems for quite an area around them, especially if the ongoing managment of the landfill site is not adequate.
It’s definitely worth knowing more about the past use of the land you live on (and considering a soil test), especially if you want to grow edible plants.
