There have been quite a few posts in the Australia community about the upcoming referendum and naturally invite a variety of views and (mostly) interesting conversation.

Since Lemmy has nothing equivalent to post ‘flairs’ at this stage I think it would be helpful to have a community where people can discuss, ask questions about, share news about or share their views on the proposed constitutional amendment. The dedicated community should be changed to only allow moderators to post after the referendum is completed.

Is there a reason this shouldn’t go into the existing Australian politics community?

All present evidence to the contrary, the question of The Voice as posed to Australians shouldn’t really be a political one.

Yeah this is what I was intending with the proposed community, not a place to push a certain view but as recognition of the significance of a referendum. Interestingly I haven’t seen any posts in the Australian Politics community about the referendum. Referendums don’t happen all the time and will have lasting implications. People need a reference to see what people’s arguments are for different views and to dispell misinformation. I don’t think I articulated that very well in my comments.

I think because it is a major political event it would be helpful to have some distinction. I was thinking we could do similar things for state elections as well.

I’d rather leave political discussions within the generic political community until such time as the volume of comments warrants a seperate community. I’m also not in favour of temporary communities.

I can see that most of the volume in /c/australianpolitics right now is links to articles. Perhaps to encourage discussion we should limit news links to /c/news (which I’ve just created). Leaving the politics community for human discussion.

this is a handy fix to the Megathread issue; it’ll keep discussion and sources focused.

Not sure I agree, given the community’s size currently. Pretty much everyone here has to vote in the referendum, but how many would actually subscribe to a community solely dedicated to it? I get the feeling that quite a few of the people who have commented in the Australia threads would not. Many don’t even understand the absolute basics of what the referendum is about or how the Voice will work. If we move the conversation elsewhere, we risk losing the engagement of all these people. And in my experience, I’ve seen quite a few change their perspective or learn something new in the conversations that have taken place to date.

The way I see it is as a sub forum of the Australia one - we wouldn’t remove posts about the referendum in Australia but more likely direct people to the proposed community
