    Pronounced “sher-may”.

If it’s not on the Northside it’s only sparkling Westfield.

I call it Chermo or Chermobyl to give it its full name. This “chermy” reeks of either their marketing team or Victorian immigrants.

I grew up within walking distance of Chermy. My mum grew up even closer than I did. Chermy is not at all unfamiliar, but “chermo” sounds like some American who’s vaguely familiar with Aussie slang not having the intuition of when to apply it.

Back in the days when Russ Hinze-o-saurs roamed the earth, I was a spotty little retail employee at that place.

One of the Pissweak World style school holiday attractions for the kids was a petting zoo, with a roo advertised as “Skippy’s brother, Chermy”.

Arguably, the term’s at least fifty years old.

I mean, that wasn’t me, but…it’s completely true. I don’t know if the Wikipedia article sources that pronunciation, but it’s definitely true.
