During the ninth century, a general's young daughter is kidnapped and trained to become an exceptional assassin. When she fails a mission she is ordered to kill her betrothed, forcing her to choose between love, family and the assassins.

I was looking for something chill to watch and this turned out to be perfect. Don’t be put off by the references to material arts. It’s not an action film.

The Assassin (Chinese: 刺客聶隱娘) is a 2015 wuxia film co-written and directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien. A Taiwan/China/Hong Kong co-production, the film is loosely based on the late eighth-century martial arts story “Nie Yinniang” by Pei Xing. It stars Shu Qi and Chang Chen.

The circuit of Weibo, though nominally a part of the Tang Empire, is de facto ruled independently by military governor Tian Ji’an.
