Dr. Westman is one of the most well spoken, thoughtful, and science focused doctors I’m aware of. He does not sugar coat (heh) the known science; it’s always worth while to listen to him
Carnivore isn’t even nearly the best weight loss diet I have done. It is a decent weight loss one, but mostly it’s health gain
I came to zerocarb because I felt less than well on keto
100% - Don’t lose weight to get healthy. Get Healthy to lose weight.
I imagine electrolyte water fasts plus insane exercise would be the most efficient in losing weight. I recently read a study (i forget which at the moment) where participants on a 60 day water fast lost 30kg.
And of course… Angus! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_Barbieri's_fast
Yeah it was 20g keto plus 3 days a week lifting heavy at the gym that worked the best
Funny thing on carnivore is in putting on more muscle with less exercise - I bought a steel bicycle as my carbon fibre one was too easy
I have gained 5kg of muscle mass just doing carnivore while also losing weight, its been amazing.
I wonder how many “I’m not losing weight” people lose 5kg fat and gain 5kg muscle
Reddit zerocarb tells people to measure themselves rather than weighing themselves. The important number being a waist measurement less than hips
Having multiple metrics is important. The body could be getting healthier in one dimension while seeming to be static in others.
Waist circumference, total weight, arm/leg measurements, and body composition scanners : all good things to monitor if you have access to them.
I’ve often hit a wall in one metric, but improved in others. When I first started my journey to health my weight was stuck for a month while my waist was going down significantly.
Yep. Tape measure tells the best. I started buying high waisted trousers (which are definitely not currently fashionable for men)
Admittedly reacting to a poorly researched video is easy fodder, but it gives him an excuse to talk about what we know, and DONT know about carnivore.
That’s too bad, clearly he has not been reading widely
Skepticism is healthy. the plural of anecdote is case study - a good place to start research, not to be ignored.
I have to assume that they are hungry when they go through 6 hours of activity without eating.
lol, tell me you never did LCHF/Carnivore without saying it directly… Assume your hungry hahahahahaha… what is worse is that the anti-carnivore person is saying people are lying about their hunger, thats a terrible basis for discussion. Meet people where they are, take them at their word in the absence of evidence to the contrary.
The Diet itself is insane… It doesn’t take a doctor to tell you that it will raise your cholesterol through the roof, give you kidney stones, leading to osteoporosis
NOW I see why Dr. Westman wanted to react to this.
Dr Westman says: That’s false… None of the things he talks about are true.
lol
Carnivores have to count their calories because their food is more energy dense (paraphrasing)
Dr Westman - Ha, if you want to learn about the carnivore diet, talk to someone who knows about the carnivore diet (while laughing).
I love Dr Westman here is how he ends the video
Do we need more research on Carnivore diets - absolutely! I’m all for that. I can’t prescribe a carnivore diet as a policy that everyone should do, thought a lot of people are getting health benefits from it.
What a reasonable assessment of the state of the literature.
Wheee! Love some of these nuts, and Westman is the most reasonable of the carnivore/keto doctors. Bet the nut doesn’t mention our un-omnivorelike stomach acid
I thought one of Baker’s main argument is “we couldn’t have gotten through the recent ice age without surviving on just meat”
Not at all! the only approach toward science he uses is the “it’s obvious”…
He clearly isn’t interested in a dialog or building knowledge with people (I’m wrong about 50% of my stuff! at least)
I was confusing him with Berry. It’s dr Berry that I especially respect
I like them both!
I think Berry is a good practitioner, he is confident in his bedside manner, considerate of his patients needs, has strong opinions but will change as the situation requires.
Westman is more the conservative academic, sticking to what is published and known beyond a reasonable doubt before making general recommendations. i.e. Westman says the anti-seedoil theories are compelling, but he hasn’t seen enough evidence to make a change for his patients. Fair enough. Importantly Westman publishes research, which is needed to advance human health.
I think In a perfect world I want Berry as the primary doctor, and Westman for second opinions if anything goes wrong.
I think the first thing I learnt about diet was that diet science has a half life of 5 years
Not sure I agree with that, the RCTs, the hard science studies from 1890, 1930, 1970, etc… All stand the test of time. The human body when observed objectively responds to stimulation the same.
I do agree the observational studies, the expert opinions, the guidelines, the meta-analysis of observational studies - has a clear bias and cyclic nature. Ancel Keys is the posterchild of bad faith science, throwing evidence away that didn’t suit his narrative.
If you haven’t read https://isupportgary.com/articles/the-plant-based-diet-is-vegan I highly recommend it, about the third party interests interfering with nutrition science (or the lack thereof). I’ll probably do a post on it (without using the Vegan word in the post title) just to talk about outside interference
So much nutrition science is interest group questionnaire epidemiology studies with dodgy food grouping (“burgers” is coded as meat) and rely on long term – 5 years – memory of meals
I’m pretty sure there’s enough low quality science to vanish over short timespans
YES! No policy or conclusion should EVER be based on food frequency questionnaires.
OVER THE LAST YEAR? Who remembers over the last year?
People are using poor quality data like this to say LCHF doesn’t work, when these people are not in ketosis… Bad faith science to push an agenda, upsets me
I think the nurses study was 5 years. How many medium servings is 900g rib eye?
Also even good observational data can be sliced for an agenda! https://hackertalks.com/post/5676721
I don’t think I could eat 900g of ribeye in one whole day. I barely eat 300g of ground beef in a day
