In short:

The fires started in Los Angeles and its surrounding communities earlier this week, and have resulted in the loss of thousands of homes and buildings.

Satellite images show the aftermath of the blazes, with houses and neighbourhoods left completely destroyed.

What’s next?

Firefighters are continuing to battle blazes around the county while the City of Los Angeles houses residents in evacuation shelters.

I guess if I had to send a fire at a house, I’d pick the house at the person/family who is unlikely to be financially destitute and potentially homeless for years after the fact.

The problem is that fire doesn’t discriminate. The rich and famous homeowners are making the news, but there will be far more regular people who aren’t particularly rich who are losing their homes also. West Hollywood is nowhere near as glamorous an address as it sounds to Australians. It’s not a rich area by any means.

Normally, we’d be sending a plane load or two of our own fireys over to help, but I don’t think we can do that in the middle of our summer. The US usually gets these wildfires in our winter.
