Two weeks ago I was curious what was happening. Looks like they can’t join overheads properly, awesome, I wonder how different their joining method is to the rest of our rail system.

An electrical wire fell onto a tram during a test of the new Parramatta light rail line two weeks ago.
That is significantly more dramatic than what I was guessing!
Perhaps this is how they solved your theorised traction issue. If the chassis is live then it will spot-weld itself to the tracks, increasing traction :)
