After some users have had issues recently, I’ve finally gotten around to putting in place a better solution for outbound email from this instance. It now sends out via Amazon SES, rather than directly from our OVH VPS.

The result is emails should actually get to more people now, rather than being blocked by over-enthusiastic spam filters… looking at you Outlook and Gmail.

Nope, I’m a fool. SES is in sandpit mode, it won’t send to anyone but my identities. Rolling back until AWS move me to production :(

It’s still potentially a solved problem. One that has been most annoying.

Okay, i’m sticking my IT dummy hand up again.

What is this post about? I’ve never had/sent any emails from Aussie Zone.

Is there some sort of notification system i’ve not noticed or, i don’t know what else it could be…??

Notifications for PMs, initial sign up welcome emails and password recovery. Though due to the host we have the server on being widely blacklisted, many never see the emails.

Thats OVH VPN? Why are they blacklisted? Do they host something like a lot of spammers, or just not big enough so unintentionally blacklisted due to size?

OVH Virtual Private Server (VPS). They host LOTS of servers, consequently lots of compromised servers or outright spammers.

Right at this moment, we have a regular Melbourne user trying to reset a password/recover account. Receiving that reset notification has been a challenge. Not every user even has their email configured in their account, it’s optional. It is sorta necessary for account recovery, however.

Through this process, I’ve learned that the user table in the database is basically what you see on the settings page. Yes, I can see which of you crazy people choose a light theme, but I’m not judging! You do you.

        Ooh, yeah, my nightmare scenario.

Yes, I can see which of you crazy people choose a light theme

If i want to burn my retinas by the blue light of a lught theme screen at full tilt at midnight no one can stop me!

Password reset emails and notification emails I guess. You can get notifications emailed through an option in your account settings.

I should look at settings more often. Feel like some of this wasn’t there last i looked, which was probably at the start of the year.

Ok, AWS have approved moved my SES access to production… raising it to a usable limit. I’ve moved the server over to using it and tested briefly, seems to be working correctly.

If anyone feels inclined, please test and post results here.

Now that the email’s been swapped over, is the warning on the aussie.zone sidebar still needed?

Please provide an email address, it is required for password resets. Be sure to not use Outlook/Hotmail, as Microsoft are blocking all email from our hosting provider.
